Recipes / Re: question about bodega bay crabs
« on: December 11, 2017, 02:24:51 PM »
I see and hear most people boil their crab. Am I the only one who steams? I feel that boiling dilutes the taste as it escapes into the water.
All i do is take 1/3 can of beer, a teaspoon of vinegar a few smashed cloves of garlic and toss my crab in. Let that steam for about 15-20 min. I mix rock crab and dungy all the time. I dont notice cross-tasting one bit. Also, i notice the meat to be firmer when steamed. Idk, just my .02

I like steaming too. Not sure what your problem is though. I just ate 2 dungies and a red rock from the Bodega area on Friday and had 0 taste problems. Maybe some bad crab? Were they dead before you started cooking? I hear it doesn't take too long for the crab to start breaking down and going bad.

"You can melt your ab iron, because abalone diving is over," Sammet said. "You will not dive for abalone again in California in your lifetime."

That's pretty depressing.

Also, for you vets and first responders out there, they have a discount program.

The Humminbird XTH 9 20 fits the transducer scupper pocket, but you get about 30' of cable to deal with, plus where once you could get a transducer exchange from Humminbird, now you must buy the proper transducer.

The adapter for a Lowrance transducer - I've only seen one that had been installed - leaves the transducer proud of a Trident hull, and like the XTH 9 20 you have a lot of excess cable to deal with.  I'm known to make graceful skidding landings on beaches, and I'd rather not be dragging a transducer in the sand when I do.  Or dragging it on anything, to be honest.

Mounting in the hull is a "cleaner" looking installation IMHO, and protects the transducer.

Mounting in-hull also allows me to secure the extra cable below deck, and except for a slight deviation in actual v. displayed water temperature readings, it has a negligible - essentially no - effect on transducer performance.  I've watched side-by-side tests that show a slight loss of down-scan imaging detail with a through-hull mount, but not enough to concern me.  YMMV.
Fair enough, especially on points of image quality and lowrance units sitting proud of the hull. My Humminbird unit is flush and personally I have had no problems with bumping or scraping. The OK T-13 has a slot for the cable to run through the hull, the excess is coiled inside. No problems with cable management for me. There is literally nothing that could get hung up on a fly rod. To each his own. I am learning there are about 12 ways to do the same thing when it comes to kayak fishing. It comes down to preference.

Curious, still consider myself new to kayak fishing, but I bought my used OK T-13 with a scuppers transducer.

Why don't more people go this route? Is this a Humminbird only product?

General Talk / Re: Ketamine Infusion for PTSD
« on: October 20, 2017, 06:50:42 AM »
My psychologist mentioned this treatment because another doctor was offering free treatments in Santa Rosa because of the mass number of people affected by the fires.  Haven’t heard back yet to see if I was a candidate.  Apparently it was given to a lot of vets, but from what I can find it its a lower dose of what they give you to forget during a surgery.

Doesn't ketamine effect a lot of other things in your body though? I would read a lot before trying anything, even my suggestion.

Never heard of it. My life saver has been CBD oil.
I couldn’t find a doctor who didn’t seem more screwed up than me to prescribe it and  give me dosages.
PM sent.

Just curious if anyone has used Ketamine infusions as a way to reduce PTSD symptoms.  If so I was wondering if it worked and if there were any side effects.
Never heard of it. My life saver has been CBD oil.

General Talk / Re: FIRE FIRE FIRE

My wife and I evacuated at 2am and it took us 5 hours via hwy 20 to get to their house in Napa. Last night at around 5 pm, their house was evacuated because of the Atlas Fire. I'm sleeping in my camper in a co-workers yard. I live(ed) off of Fulton just south of River Rd. Does anyone know if that neighborhood by the elementary school is still there? Does anyone have any ideas about how to get back there from Vacaville without going all the way up I-5 to 20?

This fucking sucks

Plastic welding.  Forget glues and adhesives.

^^^This. I contacted Ocean Kayak and they sent me a bunch of plastic sheets and welding rod for free. I bet Hobie would do something similar. Practice on a 5 gallon bucket for a bit first.

Thanks for the tip, just the tip mind you. I love when a problem can be solved so simply instead of having to buy a bunch of bullshit.

cast lures towards the shoreline. kastmasters, spinners, etc.

also, any idiot can troll. i'm a prime example.  just put out a kastmaster about 100-150 feet back and paddle.

Yea I know I could MAKE trolling work, I just get pissed off and frustrated because I don't have a great place to put my rod without jacking everything up after 5 minutes of paddling....one good thing about peddle yaks lol. Kastmasters and Rooster tails sound like a great idea, I forgot those even existed lol. I haven't used one since I was a little kid.

General Fishing Tips / Mountain Lake Trout Questions
« on: October 03, 2017, 12:14:58 PM »
Going on a family deer hunting trip in Modoc National Forest (here to be exact https://tinyurl.com/ycq2t7ob) and will be camping along the banks of this beautiful reservoir with some of the best trout fishing in the area, according to a park ranger I spoke to on the phone. well, I can't leave the yak behind so it is going with me. My question is, I haven't ever really trout fished when I wasn't trolling from a boat, I'm not really set up to troll from my yak, and I don't have a fly rod or know how to fly fish. What should I be doing? Just a bobber and a grasshopper? anybody have any tricks or tips for sitting in the middle of a reservoir in the mountains and just floating?

CA Regulations / Re: How to Apply to Become a Warden Cadet
« on: September 22, 2017, 08:38:26 AM »
I almost went this route, but this is a tough lifestyle best suited for single people. The hardest part is spending your first couple of years at the needs of the department. After getting out of the military and getting married, the last thing I wanted to do was pack my bride up and move her to Barstow or some such shithole. It's a tough, thankless life, my hat is off to the men and women who do more and make less than any other police force in CA.

Fish Talk / Re: Is it time to reduce Rockfish limits?

PolePole WOW now that is some reading. I do believe this is too wide spread to focus on Sonoma near shore. Where do they get the info for sport fishing if it form the party boat take thats NG. I have never in 50+ years been asked how many blues and black I have taken and that includes many many party boat trips so who are there asking? My old Divers and Kayaker buddies have never been asked I don't get it please explain?
How many of you other kayaker/Divers have been ask exactly what species of fish you caught and how many of each?

I got checked by a state biologist out at OC the first time I ever went fishing. They're out there and counting, and weighing, and measuring, but they can't check everyone.
