« on: January 31, 2018, 09:24:43 PM »
We have two larger events (15-20 veterans) on schedule, please mark your Calendars.

April 27 and June 22nd. Whiskeytown or Shasta, haven't decided yet.

I know the Rollins Round-up is on April 28, event will start fairly early that Friday, plenty of time to make it to Rollins, help as little or as much as you want.

We will again do as many one on one, single family events as we can. They will be scheduled as requests are made.

Don't forget about the Shasta Bass Kayak Classic March 10-11, this is our big fundraiser for the year, two day tournament on Shasta, Hobie Fishing 8 Worlds Qualifier, already have 44 paid in full with kayakers traveling form around the western US.

Any questions message me or email us at shastaca@heroesonthewater.org

Add a catfish, you would have a grand slam.

I caught all the fish on same 1/2 mile stretch of Sacramento River, I have caught catfish, bluegill (on a fly rod) and crappie also, the locals who have lived here a long time were skeptical about the crappie but I had taken a picture. After the heavy rains and flooding last year I am sure a few ponds and or creeks flooded and fish ended up everywhere.

It is really fun to fish this time of year, not a lot of guides on river, salmon season is closed, flows are down to 3400 cfs, rest the year or when heavy rain flows can be well above 10,000 cfs and muddy.

Very nice bro...catching all those smolts is a good sign..there releasing those smolts where they should.

For three or four days there were a ton of these, even saw a couple boils something chasing them, I understand last year because of heavy rain/flows at the hatchery and in Sac they dumped way down river or in the Delta somewhere. Be interesting to see how many of those fish find there way back north.

Haven't been posting to much because I am busy fishing but with low flows in river and lack of rain fishing has been pretty good for trout, steelhead, salmon, smallmouth and various junk fish. Salmon return to the Coleman fish hatchery was terrible, but steelhead was the best it has been in 30-40 years. My longest salmon was 34", most the steelhead are in the 18-22" range, trout can be anywhere from 6" to 20" and I had a couple days where I couldn't catch anything other then 6" salmon smolt because there were so many of them for a few days.

Safety First / Re: Inflatable PFD, Didn't Inflate? Cold Weather?
« on: January 11, 2018, 05:17:45 PM »
Probably the last time he uses an inflatable PFD.

I asked some of my friends on FB who live back there, I was told that some inflatable PFD cannisters freeze up in cold weather, not worth the risk, that guy is fortunate they got to him and to the hospital.

Safety First / Inflatable PFD, Didn't Inflate? Cold Weather?
« on: January 11, 2018, 05:01:37 PM »
This happened this morning in MD, I have been thinking about inflatable. Anyone have experience in cold weather?

From Maryland Natural Resources Police

An Anne Arundel County man was rescued Thursday morning from the ice-clogged Patapsco River as he clung to his overturned kayak.

Randall Heath, 46, of Pasadena fell from his boat while duck hunting about a quarter-mile offshore. His life jacket did not inflate and could not get back inside.

An officer patrolling nearby heard the 911 call for help and launched a patrol boat from Stoney Creek at about 10:45. Racing at top speed and picking his way through the ice floes, some six-inches thick, the officer reached the scene in 15 minutes.

“I didn’t see anything. It was a field of ice,” Officer Antonio Colvin said. For 10 minutes, he methodically searched the area until a firefighter on shore guided him by phone to the victim.

Colvin came alongside the nearly submerged kayak, where Heath was trying desperately to stay afloat. The officer maneuvered the victim to the stern of the patrol boat and tied a rope to his belt to keep him from sinking. From there, he wrestled Heath aboard.

"It was amazingly difficult to get him in," Colvin said. "Luckily, the ice quickly reformed around my hull and gave me a nice, steady, level playing field to get him in."

Meanwhile, Anne Arundel County firefighters in survival suits launched a dinghy and began rowing to the scene. Colvin picked them up and they began reviving Heath, who was shivering uncontrollably and unable to speak. The patrol boat fought its way through the ice to the marina at Celebrations on the Bay, where emergency medical technicians were waiting.

Heath was taken to Baltimore-Washington Medical Center for evaluation and further treatment of hypothermia and a broken hand.
