Title: Berryessa 1/7 report
Post by: JoeDubC on January 10, 2024, 12:50:48 PM
I decided to try  Berryessa for some trout, maybe salmon, maybe bass, maybe the huge bluegill that were reported at 50’.
Launched at Markley. The bait balls were mostly 40’ to 100’ deep. I dragged a spee D  shiner on a DR at about 50’ and a streamer with a wiggle disk on a sinking line on a fly rod. I may not have had enough speed @ 1.8 - 2.4 mph.
I picked up one decent 17” bass fairly early but moved on looking for trout. Didn’t get any other bites. Tried a frog flatfish which works at Pyramid but no hits.
One guy was getting some big bass according to the radio.
On the return I dropped a worm down for bluegill but couldn’t find any.
Pretty nice weather and no skunk.

Thanks for the report! How is launching from Markley? I have never tried it (even though it is probably my closest launch).

Nice, glad you didn't skunk! I was out at Berryessa a couple times out of Capell last month and wasn't getting any hits from trout at slower speeds. Mine were caught in the top 20' between 3 and 3.5mph with speedy shiners. They were definitely spread out, so who knows, maybe it was less the speed of the lure and more that I was covering more water at higher speeds?

Very easy but kind of pricey at $20. But I think it’s $10 or $15 on weekdays. I could see it being less nice if it were busier with powerboats.

That was my son that you heard on the radio. He got a decent bass and I got a little one. He said he lost a couple trout when he stopped to remove the clip on dropper weight. He was using the 5oz weight and thinks they were down around 40-50 feet.
