Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: can you give me a mask rec?

omer zero is working great for me after a few totally unsuccessful attempts.  as you know, leak may be unrelated to mask shape.  but I will say the zero is super small and seems to almost fit my 6 year old.

Thanks for all the great work.  I don't know where you find the energy to do this.  Can't decide which combo I want, yet.  I think I'll have a #4 with Sea Bass.  This is not a critique or a rant, but I still say there is no downside to a 12" Rockfish minimum across the board.  All it does is show that this contest sets its own ethical bar.  I know the answer:  "if you don't want to shoot a 10" copper rockfish, then don't."  I guess the answer to that is "if you don't want your contest (and by extension the NCKA community) to encourage the shooting of fish that are too small to be harvested, then don't."

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: navarro diving?
« on: September 26, 2016, 02:03:28 PM »
I was torn between driving down to Big Sur or the longer haul up to Mendo, but was curious about the Navarro river since I've seen guys launching kayaks from that little parking area.

I probably should have loaded up the yak but did a couple things in the morning and thought I might get a quickie dive in and still make the Stanford/USC game.  Should have taken the yak...

Anyway it was my first time there. I just did a shore dive. Can't remember seeing so many really dinky abs. With all the talk this summer about starving abalone I looked around for "urchin barrens." I was amazed to actually find some even though they were small zones, just loaded with purple urchins. Just as people described, there are some REALLY flat abs in there, sometimes only 25 feet from good bull kelp- guess they don't move enough to find better grazing.

Also didn't seem very fishy- took me quite a while to put some scraggly ass (that's a highly technical term) rockfish on the stringer. Didn't really come on great structure of the type you find launching from Albion.

Question to you veterans of this area? Where do you heading out from the parking? BTW: the wind and swell were forecast to pick up big time that afternoon, and right on schedule as my pup, Skipper, were relaxing and packing up, the swell started pumping. Going north on a day like that seems either pretty crazy or heroic? But I'd love to get more knowledge and experience if anyone wants to share either here or by PM. Thanks!

Crazy game that was . . . .

Sweet.  Funny you should say that.  I was just looking at these today.  It doesn't look like it pops in to my existing echo 150 ratchet/swivel thing, which is already installed on my T13.  Anyone install these on T13?

Fish Talk / Re: Rockfish ID??

The other probable part of the story here is that the Olives are moving North [edit: or yellowtails are moving in from somewhere].  Nice schools of olives and large specimens showing up in Mendo, and your OC example adds to the theory.

I just looked at a bunch of pics online and now I'm really confused.  The straight head profile on the olive seems to be useful, though.  Almost all the DOTY entries have a pretty straight line from top lip back to the dorsal fin, except . . .  #1:

Safety First / Re: Do You Anchor out in the Ocean?
« on: September 22, 2016, 11:44:15 AM »
One issue with anchor line is flipping the kayak from tension in the swell (if it doesn't rip off as DG mentioned = Another reason for a bungee connector.  There is a good thread by Stinkypete on NCUH on how to make a bungee connector.  Basically 6 feet of bungee with two egg floats knotted at one end and good clips on both ends.  You can then clip to kelp clip, anchor line, or another boat.  It also gives the option of ditching anchor and floats, so it can be recovered.
