Safety First / Re: Paddle float self rescue video for large SOTs
« on: June 21, 2022, 10:44:24 AM »
Yeah, those loose bungies would never work in rough water. I have a different system set up on each of my touring boats, since the rigging is always different. Sometimes I have to replace the bungies with thicker bungee material, and put it on very tight. I was taught to hold the paddle shaft onto the coaming to stabilize the paddle, but that was almost 35 years ago and is really hard to do! I’ll try modifying my SOT to have a slip knot system of some sort, or clip. Then I’ll practice!

I got my “Rescue Step” in the mail. It’s a good safety device that serves multiple purposes (using it as a tow rope and for portaging too). I’ll carry it every time I’m in a sit on top incase I come across someone that can’t flip their boat over or are too weak or hypothermic to get back in their boat. I’ll also carry a paddle float.

I liked this description and px, showing you how to upright a very wide boat with your body weight.

I saw another video of a huge guy getting in from the bow once he easily flipped his boat over. It was the only way he could do it because he was so big. He went in slightly to one side of the bow. This lower volume portion of the boat was pushed down in the water, but that created a ramp for him to be able to slide himself up as he grabbed areas to pull from.

This product looks like it could do the trick. It can be used to flip your boat as well:

Safety First / Paddle float self rescue video for large SOTs

Excellent video, including numerous ways to upright your beast of a fishing machine! Never thought that the touring boat methods of self rescue with a paddle float could be used for SOTs (or was necessary). Good to know. Perimeter deck lines are a good idea too, but be careful of entanglement. You can easily lose a finger in rough water if they’re too tight or loose and you’re not careful. You’ll have to find a place on your boat behind the seat where you can secure a paddle to use as an outrigger with the paddle float. That will probably take some modification and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!

Didn't see this post until the day after you went fishing, but for next time, consult the BASK "trip planner". BASK=Bay Area Sea Kayakers (kayak touring club I'm a member of) This very powerful tool was recently updated. You don't have to be a member to use it. It's a great dashboard type tool, everything you need on one page. The details tab shows pictures of the launch ramp after you click on the yellow put-in marker.

Great picture of the cave.  Where exactly is that?  I know there is one at Russian Gulch that was described to me as being like the one you saw, but you said you didn't go all the way up to Russian Gulch?

I had a run in with what must have been the same swan if you were just North of the RR trestle at Cuttings.  That stupid thing was honking for the longest time, then my buddy noticed that it was coming straight for us.  It took it's time, but was obviously determined to get a hit in once it got to me.  I have heard that they hit hard, and the forearm was within easy striking range. I got my paddle ready and brushed him off the first time.  The swan played like it wasn't going to do anything-preening, sticking his head under water, I really think he was waiting for me to look away.  I figured I can play that game too, so I stuck my paddle blade in the water.  As soon as I did that he came in for the hit, but I nailed him hard in the chest with a jab from the end of the paddle.  I knew it was the only way to get the message across.  He swam back to the dock where his mate was, honking the whole time.  My 2 buddies thought it was hilarious!

I think that the both of us need to take a picture of the giant swan paddle boat that sits on a dock at Black Point.  I remember that it's just North of the RR trestle.

Two buddies and I fished there Wednesday of last week, 5 jumpers all around us but no takes. I heard too much fresh water coming down? Too cold? Sweeney's "live" mushy ghost shrimp? Lots of excuses, but the fish are obviously there. Fished today at the Petaluma River mouth again for no takes, but power boater told us about a spot above Black Point where he has recently landed several fish (nothing today for him though).  The area is at the towers, 1/2 mile N from the Highway 37 bridge, East side of the river.  Petaluma Sport and Dive confirmed that fish have been caught in that area, from Mira Monte to the mouth of the Petaluma River.  Can't wait to try it!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Limits @ Mendo 11/24!
« on: November 25, 2007, 09:21:44 AM »
Lots of topwater action at Mendo Saturday under cloudy skies, and limits for Andrew and I in 2 hours and by 12:30pm. Calm water, and QUIET! Fished North of the point again, and the boils were directly across on the West shore, or near the point. 2 smaller fish on a popper in the boil, 4 larger ones on the extreme slow troll.  The kept fish ranged from 24-30 inches, 5-8 lbs.  The bite slowed  as the afternoon progressed. Only 3 other kayakers, one of which was Jonesz.  Nice to meet you Glen.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Mendo 11/19 Monday

Decided to finally take the opportunity to have an entire lake all to ourselves today, even though it's only at 30% capacity.  Got onto the water at 11:30 and ended up finding them at the point opposite of the South put in, at 1:30pm.  Lots of fish along the North side of the point.  3 hookups (1 landed, 1 unbuttoned, 1 stupid) within 30 minutes on minnows, but the bite was dead by 2pm.  We didn't see a boil all day.  Very easy launch, with only a slight amount of mud at the water line.

Thank you all for the awesome intel about the put in, rigging, where to get those huge feisty $1.25 minnows!!  My Australian buddy Andrew used to only fly fish.  Now he's addicted to LMB @ Clearlake and having huge expenditures on new gear.  Mendo is on the way! Next time we'll bring our fly rods.  This was our very first time fishing Mendo.  Now is the time.

Thanks for the update Terry.  I was just thinking about how you were doing up there.  I've been fishing Spring Lake a lot, but it's been slow but good practice for me.  I've also been building up a small fleet of kayaks to store up there in Nice, and have upgraded my bass fishing gear that is nearly 20 years old!  I'm ready for Tule Island and Rodman Slough.  Do you think I should stick to the South for the Fall? I checked out Anderson Marsh area a few weeks ago, but the water is really low back there right now.

OH...and the herring oil injected Ghost Shrimp.  Danglin, get the needle attachment for the bottle of Pro Cure Professional grade Herring oil.  It replaces the regular cap which only has a nozzle on it to goop the oil on top of the shrimp.  Inject the shrimp like you would a chicken or turkey, stick the needle under the carapice and squeeze some oil in it, as well as under a couple of shell segments of the tail from the top of the shrimp.  I squeeze some on the outside too.  Seems to make a difference.  I do this even though it kills the shrimp.

The Cuttings Wharf exit is off of Highway 121 going East, just before where 121 goes into Highway 29.  Go down river after the launch, about 1/2 mile to the RR trestle.  I was fishing about 150-200 yds up river from the RR trestle, fish in the channel, but closer to the Eastern shore.  You should be able to mark a hole there.

I haven't tried the Steamboat Slough area for stripers, but Pondsurf is the expert on this area.  I'll forward him your request.  He grew up fishing this area and speaks Striper.

Eric, you're right.  I remembered the 100 lb mark being a maximum fish, but that was under the old law of 72".   The head, fins, guts weighed 30 lbs.  I've yielded 30% of filleted fish vs overall weight, but there's more waste that way.  I skinned this one and steaked it out.

I thought so!  I could barely lift that thing up!  Felt like a hundred to me.  THANKS
