General Fishing Tips / Re: Striper boils - how do I eat them?

Top water! Walk the dog baits. Spooks poppers rovers delta wood bombers they all work good.  Nothing beats topwater action. Favorite way to catch fish by far

Safety First / Preaching the PFD message ...
« on: July 22, 2017, 12:49:50 AM »
I'll admit I never wear one anymore. When I first started kayaking I did but at some point I stopped not sure when. Then again I mostly kayak fish the delta, sac and American so it's a bit different from the ocean. But yeah I have gotten shit from other people for not wearing it and it does get low key annoying especially when it's not presented in the best way. I'll take my risks and you take yours. Iv taken the risk of swimming to and from alcatraz, angel island etc with a wet suit and no wetsuit so I think the risk of kayaking with no pfd is small in comparison. As far as preaching it i never tell anyone anything unless I'm taking a kid on my kayak or see block head swimming in fast parts of the ar. oh and hey what's natural selection ? ;)

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fall Chinook & Lingcod

Quick trip of 4 days? You could do a 2 and 2 split of ocean and salt water fishing (2 days to fish lings in the salt and 2 days to fish chrome in the river)..... Or just do all 4 days on the coast and hit both salmon and lings. If u do the first option u can stop in sac and jig the Sacramento River off you kayak which is pretty easy and has plenty of launch sites, or if the sac is dead drive 20 minutes and bank fish the American which is usually a sure shot if u time it right. Two days of that and then drive to sf (2hours). And take a cattle boat for 120 dollars and get a limit of cod and lings, or drive ur self a little further north or south towards Santa Cruz adding about an hour to ur commute and just do the whole lingcod gig ur self.

Personally I would do the two days in Sacramento, camping at a koa or ask Sherwood marina If they would let u set up a tent in the rv sect. Go floss the American River early AM. Then come back and jig the Sacramento off your kayak or toss spinners off the bank. (Keep in mind there is a salmon possession limit, thinks it's 4 but don't trust me). On ur second day take off in the evening to bodega bay. Camp at Doran, westside, or Lawson's. hit tomales the next morning for halibut and or sharks (sharks fight way better and are dumb easy to catch). Stay another night then head off early am to a place like timber cove and get ur lingcod and rockfish. Shoot u can even get ocean salmon if it's a good bite.

Check the regs, WX, tides, and ur set. Good luck!

I think the kayakkid should show us around!   :smt003  Freeport huh?  It looks like the kayakkid has a motor on that kayak..?  I'd like to hear back from him on his thoughts about reaching the hotspots without one.

I mostly jig on the Sacramento River.  Or cast a flying C from the bank.
I made that vid a few seasons ago, nowadays I'm too lazy to haul the troller down the levee. You definitely DONT need one to fish the sac just cause there are so many launches all around.  Yeah I'll post some hook ups this season while I'm home from college.

Mootching is a salt water technique for the most part. I mean you can drift roe but that's more upstream towards chico or colusa. I fish the sac around Sacramento all the time boat and kayak. My favorite technique is jigging just personal preference. I normally look for an outgoing tide when I'm going to jig, gives me a better drift and I feel like all that extra current helps push the fish downwards forces them to hold longer. I like 2 oz pline jigs, Iv gotten them on all colors but I prefer dark ones. As far as location I launch my kayak at Freeport all the time or around the yacht club and minnow hole there are plenty of easy launch areas that put you right on prime jigging areas.

It used to be an old state/county park or something like that. U can still access it by parking by the cross Chanel gates and walking down the path 100 yards. It's usually not useable since its choked off with hyacinth.

Iv swam the ocean a few times usually 1-2 miles in the bay around Alcatraz or angel and that shits cold. Did it in my bare speedo a few times and I come out all pink.  It sucks yes but it's tolerable. Now his swim skills? Well idk that's on him.
