Hobie Kayaks / Re: Revo 13 design history

Thanks, that helps. Gonna keep my eyes peeled for a revo but I think I'll jump on a good deal on a short-range beach capable boat just to get me going. There are a couple Cobras for sale right now that look promising. I like the look of the flat decks and sharp bow.

Hobie Kayaks / Revo 13 design history
« on: September 08, 2020, 10:49:32 AM »
I'm on the hunt for a kayak. I know I should demo a few before deciding but that seems particularly in these times. So I've narrowed down to a revo 13 or maybe 11. Seems like they are a good combo of surf punching power plus speed?

I'm open to getting a "starter" boat like a frenzy or something that I can at least get wet in, but it sounds like people progress pretty quickly to more capable craft.
Goals are to be able to handle somewhat large surf launch/landings since I have to travel and can't always choose the calmest days, target ling/rockfish mainly but trolling salmon looks super fun.

Are there any significant design change milestones in the Hobies (revo and maybe outback) to look out for in a used boat?

That sounds like a good day!

There's definitely a whole new world of techniques to learn, get proficient at, and eventually master. That's half the fun.

I grew up in and around the ocean and even though I've probably spent far more hours on whitewater rivers I'm still more at home on ocean waves.

Hi Jonathan!

I've surfed my river boat in the ocean many times but always stayed away from rocks. But watching "rock gardening" videos has got me intrigued. Looks a little like running medium pour-overs on the river with some complications (ephemeral and constantly changing features). Looks fun.

Thanks, all good advice.
I'm gonna cool my jets a little and see if there's an event that fits my schedule. That Tarpon does look kinda appealing though.

Thanks all. Looking forward to this adventure.  I've read a bunch of the stickied threads, in Safety esp. so assuming I have my safety kit that leaves me thinking about boats :) I'm thinking in the long term a Kraken 13.5 or Thresher but for now getting something that will just work and using the difference on safety and accessories. So the question is, does this sound like a reasonable strategy and if so, what does a minimum craft look like?

There is this https://sacramento.craigslist.org/boa/d/kayaksobo/6583671837.html Tarpon 120 for $400?

But Costco has new boats (w/ paddle) for that price. Anything wrong with a costco boat as a start? Apparently this https://www.pelicansport.com/us_en/strike-120x-angler is being sold under a costco name.

Maybe I should take this to the WTB forum.

Hi All,

My name is Max. Always loved fishing, kayaking (whitewater) and the ocean (grew up west Sonoma county), so this seems like the perfect storm (in a good way).

Haven't really fished off a kayak in the ocean before, but after having a blast on a rockfish party boat last spring I started wondering how could I fish like that under my own power. Sure enough a little internetting revealed that you brilliant people had figured it out: kayak fishing. So here I am, ready to learn.
