Wanted To Buy / Re: hobie 2015 AI trampoline

The trampoline is for the passenger ;-)

That could be a very wet ride, even in a calm sea. HAKAs are way more comfortable for a passenger (and for hiking).

Just curious what you (sebast) use for haka benches. I've been trying to figure out something that would not add too much weight, but can't seem to come up with anything I like...

Have been using spine boards for many years now. They can hold me (240 lb) while hiking, i can stand on them loading/unloading from dock  (though i try to do it very quickly ;)

I tried several versions, at that time more expensive ones were sturdier and heavier (even if specs are comparable i feel they are not). Anyways I switched to lighter ones and they work just fine.

Also, i found their advertised floating capability to be inflated - but they float on their own ;)

Thanks for the info. Which brand(s) would you recommend?

I used to have Iron Duck Base Board 35850, which feels more solid (and a bit heavier) option. Prior to that I had North American Rescue Spine Board - I think they felt similar.

Then I switched to Bak-Pak II - simply because I found a deal on a pair. They are lighter. I think they are adequate, I used them to hike on beam reach at 25+ mph at full sail. Though I would not stand and jump on them.

Helpful thread, thanks all!

I wonder - my motor (watersnake 30lb) with 5+3 speeds draws different amps at different speeds (just tested). If (and that is a big *if*) I won't ever need to go slower than 1st speed - would I benefit from PWM? I like the idea of infinite granularity and might build one anyways, just wonder about efficacy benefits.

P.S. if anybody has a favorite 12v waterproof voltmeter for the battery box (or even amp meter, 30A) would appreciate the link. Couple of voltmeter I tried are useless to gauge battery capacity

You will most definitely increase the running time of your battery. Think of it like this: the way your running it, your constantly using your battery. By adding a PWM/ESC it acts like a switch. on, off, on, off, on, off...so your only using half as much battery, increasing the running time.

I was kinda assuming there is more to that. It's not clear if motor at full throttle running 50% of time for 50% of power would use less energy than the same motor at 50% thrust using built-in speed controller .

E.g. I saw some results showing that at 50% thrust some motor was drawing ~40% of the max. Of course if always depends on the motor. Was just wondering if anybody who is using PWM has actually tested it's efficiency vs. built-in speed controller *when using in a power mode, similar to built-in speed controller*

General Talk / Re: Bixby Motor: Where to mount and store it all?

Not an answer to your question, but if somebody makes a battery that’ll fit inside the rear hatch on a Hobie, then I’ll be a buyer.

Interestingly I've been looking at exactly this for the past couple of days. I tried a motor on my TI recently and liked it.

It seems 50AH LifePo4 might fit inside the hatch (obviously lower capacity would be easier). But I've been thinking 100AH and all off-shelf batteries are too large.

For Trade / [FT/FS] RAM 1.5" bases/balls
« on: August 30, 2022, 06:12:20 PM »
Was clearing garage, found these.

- Track Ball Quick Release Base RAP-B-383U (I think it was never used)
- Round Plate with Ball RAM-B-202U
- Ball adapter with threaded post RAM-B-237U (I think it was never used)

I can add pictures if needed.

Couple of things I learned hard way:
- it's OK to furl (as in - sometimes it's not smart not to)
- get out ASAP when waves become too high and too short (as in - going against 6 ft / 6 sec even when wind is reasonably good is not a best idea). This probably more applies to the Bay, when condition can drastically change very fast - but I had some challenges in SC as well.

General Talk / Re: Kitchen Knives

Lots of great advices.

Just a note, that while Zwilling Henckels are good in general they now have lower-end (i.e. not so good of a deal) models. Same with some other brands.

Victorinox Fibrox is a great cheap $30 knife. I have several higher end knifes, but always use Fibrox if there are bones. Just remember, if you go with a harder steel (e.g. most popular higher-end Japanese knives) remember they tend to chip on contact with bones. But fantastic otherwise.

Also, you asked about set. Usually sets have many extras. Chef's and a small 3-4" paring knives are what I only use (plus cheap cleaver to break bones, and Shun fillet/boning knife)

Also, some people like Japanese style veggie knives (Santoku, Nakiri).

I found it's good to have several (many) knives around, but then it easily becomes a hobby :)
