General Talk / Re: Kayak-friendly Hotel in Monterey?
« on: August 18, 2006, 01:54:06 PM »
Ya, the best part about staying in Marina is AJ Spurs, the restaurant. It is right next to Marina Dunes...which offers 99 dollar rooms for Monterey Co locals. I've put my parents up in there with the discount before and it was awesome! Then they upgraded to one of the condos with a hottub on the deck...overlooking the ocean!

If you want somewhere that is somewhat fancy but not too pricey...go to the Portola Plaza, in Monterey. It is right at the end of Alvarado St...which is THE place to be (bars, clubs, shopping, and fancy restaurants) And Peter B's Brewpub! Plus its well within walking distance to the wharf.

General Talk / sabiki question
« on: August 18, 2006, 01:45:31 PM »
SO...I have a question about sabikis for all ya'll.

Can you use sabiki rigs after you've already kept a RF?
Because I'm pretty sure that you can only use one rod with a max of 2 hooks once you have a RF in your possession.
Maybe I just answered my own question.

In which case, I'm just posting to let ya'll know that you may get into trouble if you use a sabiki after already possessing a RF.

What do ya'll think?

Hey,
Is this the Tall Paul that was friends with Nick, in Monterey?
If so, I totally know you! Whats up!

Elkhorn Slough was proposed to be closed to fishing in ALL 4 of the Plans. So its not that much of a surprise that it was indeed voted to be closed. You will still be able to kayak there...just no fishing.
Better get your trips in soon. It will be closed to fishing by the end of 2007.
We got a group that might go there this Friday after work at Kirby Park.

Welcome imgonnayak, from one kayak-less newbie to another!
I'm in the same boat as you (no pun intended, well...kinda). Fortunately, these guys (AND gals) all seem to be very forgiving and very sincere AND nice.
So far, I've been looking for deals on craigslist and local papers. Found a few good deals so far. Its all about doing some research before buying though because I've seen some ads for 250 dollar yaks that turn out to be POS.
This website seems to have some good deals: http://kayaksantacruz.com/sales.html

Good luck,
PK

Well, it was worth a try Mahito! You'll get em next time.
Lets go back there and drift from MBK to Kirby Park or vice-versa, depending on the tide. We'll park your truck at MBK and mine at Kirby. We can go catch a bunch of smelt near the bridge on sabikis then use em to catch some sharks.

We launched at Coral St x Ocean view Blvd. Past lovers by a couple miles. Pretty popular spot for divers, shore fishers, and kayakers. The beach is right here: http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=200402161&mode=sequential&flags=0&year=2004

Kinda...just not inside the red line that says Hopkins Marine Reserve.

11051
Maybe the "red lings" were actually cabezon? I've caught some really really red cabbies out that way...
And as far as ID charts go, I bought a couple of the laminated, folding ID charts from www.rockfishID.com and love em!

Awesome report---Thank you!

And, if you don't mind answering a total newb question, where is Bear Harbor in relation to The Cove?

Thanks again!

You can't fish the area of Hopkins Marine Reserve.
But the rest of that area (Pac Grove smca) is fair game! Just no taking of invertebrates, crustaceans, etc.....finfish are legal to take there.

That area is awesome for RF...if you catch less than 20 in four hours then its considered slow.

Yeah!
My first kayak-caught lingcod!!!!! And it was a keeper! WooHoo!

Thanks again Mahito, I had an awesome time out there. Can't wait to go again. Maybe either Sat or Sunday? Let me know if you want to go.

I might have to post a pic of my lingcod when I get home from work...I'm still excited about it!

OK...now I REALLY need to get a kayak! That was too fun.
Oh ya, and I owe you 20 bucks Mahito...thanks from loaning $$ for grub at the Chicken House!

Macs at the Wharf, huh?
Hmmmmm...might have to go catch some bait! Thanks for the tip guys. I'll report back if they're still there.
Off to Kirby Park for sharks and rays tonight! Not from the yak though.

Good fishin guys,
