General Talk / Re: Humminbird Helix 5 GPS G2
« on: October 12, 2020, 04:13:51 PM »
Tech support said a) update software <done, no change> b) plug head unit in to same setup that works, so I'm hoping to find that here. I  really like the unit, but no depth=brick

I've tried with 2 different transducers, submerged at sea, and submerged in my swimming pool. No love. One of the transducers used to work.

General Talk / Humminbird Helix 5 GPS G2
« on: October 12, 2020, 02:24:37 PM »
Hey all...wondering if anyone in the San Jose area is running this unit with good results. Mine refuses to show depth. I've updated it, replaced the transducer, it's direct wired to the battery with a fuse, connections and wires all look good, shows speed and temp...just no sonar... I'd like to plug the head into someone else's set up before returning to Humminbird just to make sure I'm not the problem.

General Talk / Re: Zombie Movie Recommendations?

Zombieland is always a fun one.
Contagion, not quite zombie, but extremely relevant.
Shaun of the dead.
Warm bodies

Shaun of the Dead and Warm Bodies are just the best! I'd throw Army of Darkness in as well!

Black Sheep Brassiere in Willow Glen, or Forthright Oyster Bar in West Campbell. Both can be pricey, but the question was favorite, not most affordable!

I live just a few minutes from there, and have never even thought about trying to launch/fish there. Seems kinda murky; how's the fish quality for eating, or is this a catch and release place? If you want a newbie companion for a trip here, I'm up for it.

I was at the aquarium with family from out of town...standing there looking at the beautiful conditions...glad someone got to take advantage!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: New guy and transporting a kayak

I have a tool box mounted in my truck bed, and lumber racks. I tried the bed extender, but didn't like it. I've got an Old Town Predator PDL, and it's really heavy and awkward to put on the racks by myself. I ended up with a small trailer, which is super easy for loading up and moving, not so hot for parking and backing up! If you don't have a tool box, the bed extender makes more sense. Cheaper too!

Yeah, sure! If I fall out the boat, I promise to dive, and if I run into a bear (while wearing the suit), I'll give it a hug!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: New handheld vhf radio
« on: January 21, 2020, 02:17:30 PM »
I just got a Cobra HH600W radio, and had it out last weekend. It did get wet with no issues, and has the GPS, as well as bluetooth to answer your phone. It was a quiet day on the radio overall, but sound was good for what I heard. I will say the clip is terrible though. and there ought to be a separate loop on the body of the radio for the lanyard. I'll probably epoxy the clip in place, and maybe epoxy a spot for the lanyard as well. Battery went well over 18 hrs, as I forgot to turn it off until the next day and still had power. It has the emergency distress call thing too, if you register an MMSI #

Hey, Mike, welcome! Also, next time I'm in at Sportsman's Warehouse, I'll ask for you! I live right near there.

Your better off going out of the coastguard pier in Monterey. Head to the red buoy and fish 170 feet or so. Much faster paddle to the fishing grounds. Moss gets deep QUICK! You have to paddle a few miles towards Pajaro dunes colony to get quality dabs. My 2 cents.. Good luck! :smt006

And this is why sand dabs should listen to sea lions!  :smt002

Awesome! That's success regardless of catch!

Nice stuff! More catchy than my day for sure! Did your newbie buddy have a good time?
