Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: Albion urchin removal
« on: July 10, 2018, 08:49:23 AM »
The event is almost here and it's looking to be bigger than the last.  We will meet up at the Albion boat launch closest to the bridge for the dive briefing Saturday the 21st at 8am.  I have a portable high pressure compressor to refill tanks from my boat and we will have water and snacks for during your surface intervals or breaks.  I know a lot of people are asking for more specific details about where exactly we will be diving and what the details are but some of these questions are impossible to answer until we actually get to the event and see what equipment showed up and what conditions are.  Recreational fishing license is all that is required and there are plenty of volunteer opportunities for non divers as well.  Please bring a boat or kayak if you have them for yourself or to lend and I will see you all on the 21st.

We still could use more kayakers to ferry bags of urchin from the divers to the boats and resupply the divers with empty bags.  Rob102 is coordinating the kayak volunteers.

General Talk / Volunteers needed with Urchin Removal Event
« on: June 21, 2018, 08:23:08 AM »
Hey all,
we need volunteers to help kayak the full bags of urchin from the divers to the boats at the next event.  I'm hoping some of you will be up early for the NCKA event the following weekend and be willing to help.  Having kayaks to shuttle the bags increases the divers productivity exponentially because they don't have to swim to the boat every time they fill a bag.

Rob102 is coordinating the kayak volunteers so send him a PM if you're interested.

Contact Rob102 if you want to be part of the next urchin removal event at Albion July 21-22.  We need kayakers to ferry the full bags from the divers to the boats.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Abalone FMP submitted for peer review
« on: June 06, 2018, 11:23:43 AM »
The departments proposed Abalone FMP has just been posted for the first time.  You can see it and the TNC's proposal at the bottom of the page under additional resources.

Thanks again for everything you and Matt did to organize. Pretty amazing to see the small army of people who showed up, although there are a hell of a lot of coves and urchins to go.
I saw on FB that you are already organizing the first Mendo one at Albion. I had a question on that. Now that I have some experience both smashing and collecting, I am convinced any diver can destroy with a hammer a multiple of the number of urchins he or she can collect, bring to surface, and move to shore, much less dispose of there. And of course it was impressive that up at Ocean Cove you had organized a jet ski and that other small skiff, but most of us can't count on that. I know you said DFG was afraid smashing would trigger spawning. My question is, when DFG (or other) figures out the science of spawning, can we have events that are outside that spawning window (I assume it's a calendar thing, hours of daylight or water temp triggered). For instance, if it's safe to smash them in Sept, then why not do a big event then? Or April or whenever works? Also I heard several times people mentioning that it seems somehow more appropriate to be crushing them in the ocean where they immediately become part of the (deprived) local food chain. Not complaining at all, just hoping we can increasingly leverage the available manpower!
Thanks!

Crushing is the preferred method all over the world. The fear in the department that crushing would cause a massive spawning event is not shared by any other biologists that I know of.  I have to do what I can with what I'm given. Cynthia Catton has said that she will never approve a recreational smashing event and I believe that is the opinion of the department and the commission.  That said, I have submitted a scientific collection permit application that would allow us to smash if the department goes in the week before to sample and rate the probability of spawning due to crushing.

It's an error in the article.  The limit was changed from 35 individual urchin to 20 gallons.  She probably got confused because we were pouring the crushed urchin into 40 gallon barrels to haul out.

The person needs to be an employee of Apple.

It's been mentioned but it doesn't go anywhere

I attended the Sonoma County Fish and Game Commission meeting last night for the final decision on a grant application I had submitted in April.  The Commission is very supportive of our endeavors and voted unanimously to award us another $20,000 for our commercial efforts in Sonoma County.  With this grant the Watermen's Alliance and Scan have cracked the $100,000 mark for funds raised to pay the commercial divers.

Here's the breakdown:

$25,000 Grant from Mendocino County Fish and Game Commission
$20,000 Grant from Sonoma County Fish and Game Commission
$20,000+ donations to Watermen's Alliance from divers and tournaments
$35,000+ from donations to SCAN and allocated from dues paid by members

I want to thank all of you that have donated to the project, and some of you have donated very generously.  I know this sounds like a lot of money but we are going to run out of money in Mendocino soon, probably by mid June.  If anyone is a member of the Elks, Eagles, Masons, or any other organization that raises money for charity please ask if I can come make a pitch to your board. Remember, this project is going to go on for years.  We need to constantly find new ways and new places to get donations and raise funds.  I'm thinking of running a poker tournament to raise money.

If anyone is an employee of Apple, Watermen's Alliance is registered now with their charitable donation matching program.  Apple will match your donation twice, making your donation three times your original donation.

Thanks again guys and see you at Ocean Cove next weekend.

Josh

I am applying for a collection permit that would allow me to use volunteers, removing the recreational limit.  If I get it, it's going to be a large scale effort.  Watermen's Alliance is currently employing a commercial diver to clear Caspar Cove and the Cove to the north towards Jug Handle.  Once that area is clear we will choose another but the commercial diver can't get into the shallows where so many of us can.  A large scale volunteer effort would allow freedivers to get right up to the cliffs and clear the shallows.  Recreational scuba divers could clear areas a little deeper.  I wouldn't want boats going in over head so if we had a number of kaykers volunteer to take full bags from divers and give them empty ones to continue harvesting.  Kayakers could hand the bags off to boats that could empty the bags on the deck of the commercial boat.  I plan on going cove by cove with this as long as the money and the volunteers hold out.

In seven days work the Commercial diver has cleared most of the north side of Caspar.  Two divers at $500 per day are averaging 1500 sq ft cleared per day.  He's focusing on the densest populations in areas that had kelp last year or the year before.  The hope is that we can suppress the urchin enough to allow a significant bloom this year.

I had a meeting in Fort Bragg last Friday with 20-30 more commercial urchin divers to try to persuade them to join our efforts.  $500 per day isn't a lot for these guys so I understand their hesitation but i think the meeting went well.

I'm all for putting the best foot forward.  If Joshua and the other guys in the trenches think I'm the best option, then so be it.  If they think someone else would serve their purposes better, I'd happily support that person.

I think you'd be great Allen.  As I said before, the intention is to give the stakeholders a voice in the process as we look for volunteers and design the program we need feedback on the best ways to reach and maximize the potential from each group.  Once we develop the program you'll be a great person to recruit kayak volunteers and promote the events to kayakers.  PM me your phone and e-mail and I will give it to the coordinator later today.

14
I don't have more information on the meetings but you can ask Rietta at rietta.hohman@noaa.gov

Smashing is on the table.  Tightly controlled by the DFW.

15
Right now, there are three meetings scheduled for 2018,  one April 25, then August 2 and September 13.The meetings are during the week during work hours unfortunately.  The intention is to give the stakeholders a voice in the process as we look for volunteers and design the program we need feedback on the best ways to reach and maximize the potential from each group.
