I haven’t caught any Kokanee salmon. I am thinking to go try Stampede lake near Truckee. Appreciate any info regarding where to launch kayak and where to troll, etc.

Any recommendations where to catch stripers in delta or the SF bay November and December? I heard Montezuma slough is good but also heard about catalytic converter theft in the launch parking. So I am concerned about parking in a place where most or all cars are fishermen’s who leave the cars for hours. Ideally launching from a paid marina or a parking lots shared with hikers or tourists.
I caught stripers in Alameda rock wall when I saw birds diving. But that is a hit and miss. I also launched from big break once but only caught small fish. Another place I tried was Cullinan Ranch but no luck.
Looking for new place to fish.

Launched at SC harbor at 7. Headed to mile buoy. The swell seems to keep most fish mouth shut. Only caught two small rock fish which I let go. Decided to head to the lighthouse to see if better luck there. While waiting for my partners to get ready, saw some fish in fish finder. Drop my 8oz swim bait. And not long, caught a nice ling at 26”. It’s not big, but my PB on kayak. So I am pretty happy.
Trolled to the light house with no actions. Eventually caught two more ok size rockfish in about 60 feet of water. First time fished the light house area. Did not mark many fish, and very few takers. Started heading back around 11 as the wind kicked up. Picked up a couple king fish and jack smelt. Trolled the king fish for a bit at 40 feet water but no halibut. The ocean was a bit too rough to continue. So we called it a day.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Santa Cruz Sunday 9/5
« on: September 05, 2021, 05:02:55 PM »
Fish Santa Cruz again today with skyfight. It was quite foggy in the morning. After fixing my reel, I totally lost the orientation and don’t know where the mile buoy is. First time used Navionics and it didn’t give me the orientation which seems weird. Ended up using maps.me that pointed me roughly the right direction.
The fishing was decent. Caught two lingcods, 23” and 22”, and a cabezon 14.5”. Let the cabezon and 22” lingcod go ( too close). Also caught quite a few nice rockfish. We found a big school of mackerel next to the bout. It was fun to catch mackerel. Most of them are 12” or so. Finally I caught one about 7”. Use that live bait, and a few minutes later, caught that 22” ling. Then the wind kicked up. And we started trolling back to the harbor. A kayaker I talked to there caught a 10lb halibut with live mackerel. Wished I found that school of mackerel sooner.

Launched from Santa Cruz harbor with clockwise. Out around 6:30 and back 1:30. Caught about 10 RF each of us. Most of the rock fish was from miles buoy. Trolled for halibut but no takers. Swell forecast was 4 feet. And wind picked up around 1.
Overall a nice fishing day and glad to have a company.

Safety First / Shark Shield
« on: August 17, 2021, 01:15:13 PM »
I saw a few hookup reports mentioning Shark Shield. What shark shield kayakers use? I see Ocean Guardian has many different models, for diving, surfing, boating. Just not sure which one is best for kayaking. Also, does it need to be submerged in the water to be effective like fish finder transducer? Or does it work anywhere on the kayak?
Appreciate any information or testimony whether it worths the money.

Safety First / Kayak self rescue
« on: July 31, 2021, 12:41:56 PM »
I got my Hobie Compass this year. I know safety is number one priority. I got my PFD, dry suit, vhf radio, and pump. I also watched self rescue videos. But never practiced. Today I fished oyster point for a few hours. There was not a single bite. I decided to call it a day and paddle back to the harbor to practice self rescue. I put my fishing gears and anything that can fall into the water on the dock. Then I stand up on my kayak, a first time for me. The compass is stable enough to standup, at least in calm water. Then I jumped into the water. With PFD on, i naturally float on my back. I know I need to kick my feet to lie flat on my stomach. It took a couple tries. But I was able to get back to my kayak. Not piece of cake, but doable.
The next step is to flip my kayak. If I fall in the water, chances are that my kayak would flip too. It took lots of effort, leaning my entire body to the left, and finally the kayak was flipped. Here came the challenge. I was supposed to grab the other side of the kayak handle bar and use my body weight to flip. The bottom of the Hobie Copmass is pretty smooth. I tried 3 to 4 times, but can not grab something to reach the other side of the kayak. And I was getting tired. I decided to give it up and start swimming back to the dock which is probably only 40 feet away. My life was not in danger as I was in a very protected water in the harbor. If I were in open water a few miles offshore, I may have to call the coastguard for rescue.
Well, the coastguard saw me and offered help, which I really appreciate. They suggest me tie a rope on one side of the kayak so I can grab the rope to flip the kayak. This is what I will do next. Just want to share my story.

Anyone fishing Alameda rock wall recently and any report? I fishing Oyster Point for last two weekends but only got a few shakers. I am wondering if the adult halibuts have moved to different locations?

Hi, all.
Just got my new kayak. I know safety should be my number one concern. Other than life jacket and maybe a dry suit for cold water, I am considering a personal locator beacon that can send SOS and GPS location in case of emergency. Any recommendations from this group?
  Thanks in advance.
