Fishing Pics / Re: Finesse bass

Thanks for the post.  It seemed in LMB fishing there are a million ways to catch a fish but two most consistent method, especially with warmer water, was a Texas  or wacky rig.  Have you tried the weighted Gamakatsu wacky hook?  It makes the senko travel down the water column a little faster.

Awesome! Glad you got out in glassy conditions despite the forecast.

General Talk / Re: Downrigger weight replacemet

I recently bought a pair of 4lb weights on amazon for $8.95 each and free shipping.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01ND43TRL?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

They showed up quickly and get the downrigger line down. What more could you need?

And bummer about the yard sale! I donated my hawg trough there once when a landing didn’t go as planned.
Cheap and Amazon-easy. Sounds like a winner. Thanks for the tip. BTW, while Kevin and other spectators were watching from shore,  I almost yard saled.  A wave came up from behind me, my kayak rotated about 20 degrees to one side I thought I was done for, and then the wave passed under me.  :headbang:

Simplycook, Kevin, and I were fishing Bolinas yesterday when I snagged my donwrigger weight on a reef (Today, after viewing Navionics, I discovered I was primarily fishing over a very reefy portion off Bolinas.  Duh!)

Any recommendations on a 4lb downrigger weight?  I see they range in price from $45- $15.  I believe I had a Cannon Flash weight. Amazon wants $43.

Of yeah, and if you read this far you deserve a fishing report Kevin: 2 keeper size halibut, returned back to see, 4 keeper dungies.  (The crazy mo fo decides to take 2 Danielson cage trips and the water was not calm by any means.) Mike: 2 take home Croakers. Sad to admit but they were delicious breaded in Panko bread crumbs and fried up. :smt001

General Talk / Re: Battery connections
« on: June 16, 2019, 07:21:15 PM »
Thanks for al the responses.

So, what I plan to do is solder and shrink wrap the wire using the new waterproof connectors.   I'll secure the battery box inside a shape of foam of some kind and then have a velcro fastener to hold the battery in place in the event of a capsize.  While I've considered placing the battery inside the rear hatch of the Hobie I will place it in the middle hatch under my knees, like before, just in case I need to access the battery while on the water. I also plan to secure the insulated portion of the FF cable with the transducer and power wire encased.  I feel I need to this because I sometimes pull too hard when connecting the wires to my FF.

You might try soldering on (Heat shrink each solder joint) water proof connectors (Plugs& sockets)instead of the individual spade connectors. I've used the spade terminals they last a few years (On my truck not ocean going kayak!) but eventually corrode (Crimped connection) now if/when I choose spade terminals I don't go lazy and simply crimp, I solder now.  Either liquid electrical tape or heat shrink tubing over the connection.  (Remember to place the heat shrink tubing on the wires before you join them)
As far as anchoring the battery box?  Maybe Velcro strips stuck to hull and battery box?  you'd have to anchor the hull piece of Velcro to the hull really well.  Depending on the Velcro patch size, its contact patch and sticky glue, may enough to adhere to hull without adding a glue medium to help?
Great advice, CGN.  The soldering,  shrink wrap, and  waterproof connector will work well.  This is the first time I've heard of liquid electrical tape.   As for anchoring the battery box I HAVE installed heavy-duty velcro to the battery box and hull but I find the velcro eventually becomes fouled with sand and crap and no longer adheres well. Now that I think of it there was another NCKA that I believe made a foam retainer that the battery box sits inside.  I may give that a try.

General Talk / Battery connections
« on: June 14, 2019, 09:11:20 PM »
I have a very tenuous battery connection that finally snapped during my last ocean outing.  Luckily, visibility was good and I was not far from the launch when it happened the so I didn't have to rely on way points to get back home.

The battery cables that came with my Lowrance FF are super thin.  Any advice at all would be appreciated: connectors, how to route battery wires, securing the battery box to the kayak so it doesn't slide around(I believe this to be the culprit to the broken wire).

Thanks y'all

General Talk / Re: Dry suit under gear
« on: April 07, 2019, 08:36:51 PM »
I think most people wear polyester base layers including myself.   Cotton is NOT recommended because it doesn't wick sweat away from your body although I can't confirm this.  Its easier to deal with over heat, you can open your dry suit temporarily or tug at the neck gasket.  There isn't much you can do about getting cold so keep a beenie or balaclava around in case the weather changes.

You also may want to keep around a utility cup i.e. a piss cup.  Personally, I use a plastic Jack in the Box cup.  NCKA members will attest to the fact you may get a fish-on when doing #1.  :smt044

Tomorrow, I'm gonna give Paradise Park a go.  It was about 1 year ago at PP that I had my maiden NCKA meetup with Eddie and Capt. Sloppywood, who has a new handle now.  :smt006 I hope to be on the water by 9.  HT is 11:40A.
Brah!  I stay jealous...geetum, we fished on your birthday! :smt006
Thanks Eddie! You are correct, young man. Looking forward to revisiting the algae slide.  :smt002

Once in a while, the assistance is reversed. 2019 Outbacks at Lake Mendo towing a boat with a dead battery, on New Year's Eve.
Here is a selfie I took while towing a motorboat off a lake.  The motorboater wasn't about to die of hypothermia, but would have been blown onto the shore.

HAHAHA Is he seriously trolling while you pedal him back in?! hahaha what a crack up.
He was probably telling Pete to speed up so his lure could have the right action.

Cool time line.

Sounds like a Disney movie.  :smt001 Except you left out the part where its mother and father were torn in 1/2 by a shark.   And how this turtle gonna seek revenge and give that same shark salmonella poisoning.

Sorry, I'm excited its spring and halibut and salmon season are near.  :smt006
