Safety First / Re: Flipping PA/Outback right side up
« on: July 13, 2016, 09:58:17 PM »
Thanks for posting the vid.  I like it when people post things about safety, I usually learn a thing or two because so many people on this board have been yak fishing for so long and share their knowledge.

A few more words of kindly constructive criticism if you don't mind.

I've flipped Outbacks, Revos and Adventures a plenty.  In 2 short years of kayak fishing I've become an expert at falling out of a Hobie.  :smt044
Sometimes in 56 degree water with 6-7ft swells.  For me, getting out of the water as quickly as possible with the least amount of energy expended is important.  Practice, practice, practice.

1.  Don't grab the fins - they're too floppy.  Grab at the base and you can easily pull the yak rolling towards you while your other hand grabs the far gunwale to finish the righting.

2.  Trying to re-enter with your legs hanging down below you is a waist of energy.  Kick or float your legs up to just below the surface behind you, get fully extended then give a mighty scissor kick while pulling the boat under you.  Do it too well and you can launch yourself over the other side.  Time it right and it will feel effortless.  It didn't look like you had enough room in that little pool to demonstrate that method.

I'm in, wouldn't miss it.

I'm planning to be there again this year.

Count me in for a spot.

General Talk / Re: VHF... are you up to speed?
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:20:55 PM »
As we enter the new year and prep for the upcoming events gatherings, I see emphasis on gathering the proper gear, PFD, VHF, emergency knife etc. But one thing I rarely hear about is how to properly use such equipment.  Of course we all know how to wear a PFD, and use a knife safely  (or at least most of us), but do you really know how to use your VHF radio? I have been at many events where some of the most advanced kayaker were telling partners to switch to channels that are for special use, or had non emergency mayday calls.
Imagine a serious emergency at one of these events, and someone can't contact the people needed because a certain person didn't know that the VHF wasn't a cell phone.
I have always thought of hooking a base (VHF) unit up to my kayak trailer for use at events. The reason is that a base unit would not only transmit farther,  but receive a signal from a weaker (5 amp) handheld at a farther distance.
Now that I'm living at the cove, I decide to hook up a VHF radio at the Tides Inn for the same reason.
After reading the owners manual (not much else to do when it's raining) and was amazed at some of what I learned.
I'm asking that anyone who attends an event or gathering to read up and hone your skills on the proper use of your VHF radio, you might also be suprised at what you can learn.

Does anyone familiar with the camp ground and specifically site 128 know if there's room to park a microsport trailer at the campsite?

I'll be there rain or shine to chill, maybe try fishing.

I'm going to pick up a rig this weekend to fish for surf perch.  I've never even seen a surf perch, I don't have any idea how to fish for them but I'm sure there's some info somewhere on the internets.

I'm bringing my AI, maybe I can get some sailing in too.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Anyone fished the HMB jetty lately?
« on: January 22, 2016, 11:35:33 AM »
Maybe try Horseshoe Bay.  North end of GGB.

Go out on the Satterlee breakwater at lowest tide and poke pole for monkeyface pricklebacks.

I've had an interesting 2nd year kayak fishing with a few new species caught including Cali Halibut, both male and female kelp greenling and thresher shark.

I was fortunate to limit on halibut once and limited twice on thresher shark (once in a PB, and the next weekend on the AI).

1. PB ling
2. Halibut - thanks Capt. Sloppywood for the intel.
3. A pair of thresher sharks - thanks Lost Anchovie for the pointers.

If you see four idiots in a 18' PB show up, give us a shout on the radio.   :smt006

We'll be straight out from the cove in 130 of water trying to sabiki up some sand dabs.
Big lings love sand dabs.  :smt007

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Track mounted rod holders
« on: October 07, 2015, 09:59:26 PM »
I've got 4" GT90 tracks/backing plates on each side of my Revo and use a gear head with Scotty rocket launcher rod holders.

If you mount a rail on the left and use a gear head just be aware that any leverage on the rod to the rear will try to unscrew the t-bolt and loosen the gear head.  I've used mine on the left for slow trolling/drifting for Halibut with the drag loose and a clicker on and that worked OK.

Also, what ever setup you decide on, make sure you can still self rescue quickly without the bolted down stuff getting in your way.
