General Talk / real estate agent for Shelter/Whitethorne area?
« on: March 13, 2018, 10:27:29 AM »
Hi guys, figured I'd ask this question here.  Would any of you North Coasters have an agent to recommend? I've got one potential but would appreciate any suggestions as well.

Never thought I'd hear my wife say "why not move to the Cove or Bragg?" but here we are :smt007

Never gone property shopping without external duress, so I'm kinda looking forward to it.
We've got kayak-unrelated friends in the Hydesville and Ferndale areas we're going to visit soon so we can get a nice taste of the place.

thanks guys!

Finished another big piece, this time a 3x4ft with a Long Range theme
Clockwise from left there are distant Ahi chasing bait, Wahoo ,pacific mackerel, anchovies, skipjack (or bonito) with a nice fat Ahi for the main event.
Now it’s on to the AOTY awards!

OK, so they aren't "barndoors" but for calihalis they are ptreety good.

whole squid in 100+FOW on Sunday. Fish ended up 38"/21lbs and 32"/13lbs
water was supposed to be SCA but it clamed off nicely from about 9-noon.
Got major WAF point for these two :smt002

Not mine but...
Took a long walk near county line this morning and came across some seagulls munching on this carcass. Could have been killed by a seal as it wasn't a filleted frame ( I took this pic on the hike back and by then the gulls had really cleaned it up. When we first came across it there was a lot of meat on the carcass) From the tail width I'd say it was a 20+ lb fish.
Some surf casters we ran into had a trio of nice striped seaperch .

Craftsmen's Corner / From beneath the tarp, it emerges

It's been a long time since my little truck kicked off the "how do you roll" page.
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=14071.0

I recently acquired a rebuilt ICM and fired it up after 9 years. The plan is to pump it up just a tad so it rolls on 33s, rattle can paint it, lop the top and cruise through the summer of 2017.

Introductions / the new guy
« on: January 27, 2017, 01:17:39 PM »
Well, years after saying goodbye to my beloved husky the wife and I have adopted a new dog.
The criteria was for a smaller, lighter weight version, preferably male, that could hike 6-8 miles without issue.
this is Gary, our new guy. 3yr old 1/2 Italian greyhound, 1/2 Basenji. He's not to stoked on the weather lately, but he'll love the summer.
here he is chillin at my office:

General Talk / finally getting Piscean Artworks stickers
« on: January 29, 2016, 03:35:36 PM »
I am pretty stoked, this is the first thing I get to cross off my 2016 list of shit-to-git-done. should have the initial run by next week.

I went with a local printer  & we covered the "will be put on plastic kayaks, exposed to sun & salt" question. These will be made with UVA resistant media/ink. These are going to 5" diamonds.

General Talk / gun control, or "know who you are 'jacking"
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:16:35 AM »
speaking of gun control, here's a little feel-good story about one badass car salesman.

due not only takes a beating, pulls a Bond-esque escape, uses tracking technology, but also shoots one of the perps with the perp's own pistol.

hats off to you, dodge charger sales guy.

Fish Talk / Sharktember 27th
« on: September 28, 2015, 08:36:35 AM »
Yesterday was a busy one on the sea. After reading Ghan's story, figured I ought to post up my own.

I was fishing on off of Davenport with my buddy Matt, we had set up squid in 80-90FOW.
The water vis was about 20 feet.  We had launched at dawn and were a couple hours into the session.

At about 9:30 am I catch a swirl about 10 feet off my port side, turn my head, and see the top half of Whitey's tail as the big fish makes a 180 turn. Maybe 18 inches of tail was above the surface.

It was close enough I could make out the rough skin surface and the bronze color of the skin, and of course that telltale notch in the upper caudal fin lobe. The fish was probably 12-13feet in length. After the quick U-turn the fish went into a smooth glide beneath my bow and disappeared off my starboard side, with its whole side glowing silver at about 15 feet under in the clear water.

I'm pretty sure the fish came up and got a taste of the deployed shark shield and decided against contact. I think the quick U turn was the fish being spooked as it would have just then come into contact with the shield's shock range. I can't be 100% sure the shield was what chased it off, but I'll tell ya, knowing it was on really helped during the seconds during the encounter.
Matt & I doubled up about a kayak length apart for a double shield dose and  fished for another couple hours with no other sightings.

General Talk / DoonArt Open Studios July 25-26 2015
« on: June 26, 2015, 01:39:13 PM »
Hey NCKA brethren,
I'll once again be participating in an open studio tour in the Santa Cruz mountains. This will be my fourth year doing so after taking last year off.
so far I will have a selection of wooden panel pieces in the Pacific NW style, a series of humorous fictitious business signs (all fishing related), some handmade gaffs, and some magnets as well.

You can find my artist bio and tour map at the link below.

http://bonnydoonstudiotour.com/

This will be an outdoor garden show. As added attractions we'll have a Tarot card reading tent on Saturday the 25th, and on Sunday the 25th we'll have an American Tribal bellydance performance courtesy of Callalilly Tribal.
We'll be open 11-6 each day.

I'll be taking some in progress pics and updating this post shortly, but here's my famous " Pac hali with Herring" as a teaser. This piece is now back in my possession and has become my most recognizable work, done on a 3x3ft cedar panel. (as another teaser, two of the larger pieces in the show were inspired by this one)

Craftsmen's Corner / corroded Wheeleze valve
« on: June 02, 2015, 03:14:02 PM »
so last week i find one of my balloon tires is looking really low.
No prob, I get the pump out and try to fill it to 4psi...but the valve is frozen shut.
some delicate application of elbow grease and some anti corrosive stuff later I get it to open, but now it won't close. Eventually in fiddling with it the internals of the valve simply crumble, totally corroded after 6 years of regular use.
Yes, I rinse the cart regularly in FW (I'll be paying closer attention to it now though)

yesterday I ponied up for a new wheel/tire (ouch) but am planning to see if I can save my old one as a spare. The wheel and bearing are still functioning.

Anyone ever disassemble their sand tire & bearing wheel and replace a valve on the tire?

General Talk / Shadow Divers-a good read
« on: March 04, 2015, 09:46:17 AM »
I just finished the non fiction book "Shadow Divers" and really enjoyed it.

Although I don't consider myself really into military history OR deep wreck diving, it was an amazing story of the courage and tragedy that surrounded the investigation of a German submarine found off the coast of New Jersey. From the divers to the story of the crew aboard the sub, it is a great journey.

I heard a rumor that Peter Weir is attached to direct a motion picture based on the story.
