For Sale / For Sale: Malibu II XL Package -- SOLD
« on: September 08, 2014, 01:50:59 PM »
I need space in my garage. Maybe someone can give her a good home.

Here's what you'll get:

Malibu II XL
2 Paddles - 220 cm Aqua Bound and 230 cm Flaire
3 Seats
8 Lb Anchor
2 PFDs – Both Large\XLarge
RAM Rod mount
Fishfinder - Humminbird Piranhamax 220
Emergency Radio - West Marine VHF 150 Submersible
Wheeleez
Jumbo crate

Here we have an older Malibu II XL with everything you need. It's been stored outside, and it's a little dirty, but it's all there. I had it out on the Foster City Lagoon this last Fourth of July with my daughter and there are no leaks. I also filled it with water and nothing leaked.

I set it up solo by using the piece of oak zip tied to the eyelets on the deck of the kayak. This gives me a platform for the RAM mount and fishfinder. Snip the zip ties, and you can go tandem.

The middle tupperware cover and side handles are new. The smaller hatch is missing a strap clip, but it seals fine, and can be fixed to the deck with minimal effort.

The fishfinder has always worked, but I haven't charged the battery in a couple years. It may or may not take a charge. I have a battery charger that I'll throw in.

The Wheeleez work great over all kinds of terrain. There was an issue with one of the Wheeleez lots, something was wrong with the wheels themselves, and the manufacturer ended up replacing them. These are the corrected wheels.

$800 takes it all. I’m in San Carlos.

Thanks!

Brian

Launched at about 10:00 looking to fish the incoming. Caught some 'chovies off the launch dock. Marked tons of bait, but there was too much wind. Couldn't hold my position, anchor (12 lbs) was dragging, so I called it. Seems to be lots of life there, and I'll try it again when it's a bit calmer.

General Talk / I was at ATT&T park on Friday night
« on: July 11, 2009, 03:46:56 AM »
My wife came home on Thursday with two Giants tix, seems one of her associates, a season ticket holder, couldn't make it on Friday night. Let's see...Lincecum, no, Sanchez (2-8) is pitching. Hmmm...never been to the new park, and my wife has never been to a Major League Baseball game ever...yeah, let's do it. Like to see Lincecum or Cain, but oh well.

Middle of the 6th inning, I leaned over to my wife and said, the tension in here is going to start, because something very unusual is happening.

First MLB no-no of the season, and I got to watch from the Lower Box section behind 1st\RF. First Giant's lefty to do it since 1929. First in the new park. Last SF no-no was 33 years ago.

 :wav:

I doubt I'll live long enough to see one of those in person again.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / 3/13 Delta
« on: March 14, 2009, 11:13:23 AM »
Launched from Wimpy's and trolled south for a nice striper at about 9:30 am. Turned it around and tried for LMB but no luck. Worked my way back past the launch and went west of Wimpy's for more nada. I talked to one group in a PB who said they caught some crappies, everybody else I talked to got skunked. Most of the PBs were great - slowing down to pass. Lots of stew in the water...very nice day otherwise.

First time fishing the Delta...
Launched from Bethel Island Harbor at about 10:00, paddled to False river, around the tules and back. I marked a school (stripers I think) near False, but no takers. Saw a guy land a LMB on a spinnerbait in the tules, talked to a PB at about 2:00 - they said they got a couple before 7:00am, then nothing. They had also been to Discovery Bay that morning. Off the water at 2:30.
Conditions were mild\calm, water temp was about 56.

Any tips on 1) fishing the tules and 2) keeping position in current? I have a heavy enough anchor and release rigging, but I can't keep pointed in the direction I want to be.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Berryessa Feb 3
« on: February 03, 2009, 07:37:54 PM »
Launched from Capell Cove at about 9:00, paddled to two rocky points - never made it to the main lake. Caught 3 bass in the 2-3 lb range on minnows, lost a fourth at the boat. The bites were unbelievably soft, but they fought well. They seem to be feeding. The first one I caught almost coughed up a crawdad - it's claw was reaching almost out of the fishes mouth. :smt005
Great weather after the sun came up, almost nobody else out there - maybe because it was 27 degrees in the morning???!! Off the water at 2:30. Good times. I'll post pics tomorrow.

We spent Thanksgiving in Tampa Bay with my in laws and I got a pass to do some fishing. I found Peter Poletti of Mako Kayak Fishing on the web and got set up for the Tuesday before Turkey day. Peter was very responsive and professional, and I felt like I got lucky – no time to shop around.
www.MakoKayakFishing.com

Met at Weedon Island State Preserve at 7:00 and went through safety stuff. The water was about 5’ in the deepest spot, glass calm, 72 degrees.

We tried topwater plugs for nothing first, then paddled through the mangroves out to larger Tampa Bay. More topwater plugging for a few short strikes, but still nothing. We startled a couple of Snook which were hiding in the mangroves, who in turn startled me. Also saw a couple small stingrays.

We saw mullet jumping everywhere, which was unnerving, but they’re vegetarian, and Peter was amazingly stoic, focused on reading the water. Mullet apparently share the same habitat as redfish, which is one of the species we were hoping for.
After about an hour and a half, Peter switched me to a 6” jerk bait, and I got a small flounder.

Not long after that we figured out that spotted sea trout would be the target species, and I hooked 6 or so, landing 3. This one is about median average. They ran sideways, belying their size, until they saw the boat, and then ran away from it.
We fished until 2:00 and paddled back through the mangroves. Saw a dolphin on the way back.
Overall, a great day. The weather cooperated and Peter’s your man if you’re in the area.

Also fished from the shore on a "pass" which is a channel between the Gulf and the Intercoastal Waterway. On Wednesday morning, I had the most exciting two hours of fishing in my life, and I didn't land anything.
I had two good hokups, much larger than anything I got on the yak, but they came unbuttoned. Then my brother in law got spooled. After I got broke off again, he hooked up using a heavier rig, and after a 20 minute fight, he landed a 12-15lb Bonito, which we invited home for dinner. I was standing on the rocks close to the water and I could see bait jumping, bigger fish (probably several species) following, birds, all heading straight for us.
My brother in law landed a snook (approx 20") the next morning.

Florida fishing is pretty wild. I stopped into two tackle shops, and I could see that the fishing thing is a much bigger industry there. Both shops offered custom rod building, and were very well stocked with everything from crappie jigs to marlin rigs.

I'll be back!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Berryessa 3/4
« on: March 05, 2007, 07:29:03 PM »
Got some last minute WAF, and I was off like a shot.
Launched from Wragg Canyon - $10 day fee. Campsite 88 had nice little muddy trail just big enough to slide the yak down to the beach. Once on the water, Turkey birds and crazy campers traded the mike...it was hilarious. The gobblers would call, then this guy would answer with an absurd turkey impression...on it went.
It was overcast and a bit chilly till at least 1:00. I tried the rocky points with plastic worms - didn't get bit until about 11:00. I ended up with 2 bass 13-15 inches. Trolled back to the campsite and got bit, but it was off quick.
First time lake fishing from my kayak. Lots of tangles - just getting used to the work area.
I had trouble with the 1.5 lb anchor I bought for the trip - it was useless on a smooth bottom. Anybody else have that problem?
Pictures will follow.
