Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: New to kayak fishing, fly rod a bad idea?
« on: May 27, 2016, 05:21:34 PM »
I took up fly fishing for rockfish and lingcod about a year ago.  It is a blast catching rockfish on a fly.  I would definitely say it is not a bad idea but a great idea!  Just make sure you either have a way to leash or float your rod if you capsize or lose the handle on your rod for whatever reason.

I would go tomorrow, but a bit too far a drive for me since I have stuff to do in the afternoon :( .  It should be a nice day on the water though.  Good luck!

I took both a private class and a surf zone class with Matt, both of them were excellent and I would highly recommend taking this class due to my previous experience with him.

Thinking about buying this dry suit:

Has anyone seen it in person?  Any thoughts about it?  Do you think it would be a good purchase?  Thanks!

This looks like the class I was discussing with Sean back in November/December and trying to get together.  I'll cross post this to the other thread.  Thanks!

Michael

This doesn't look like an advanced kayak fishing safety class.  All of this was covered in the class at Timber Cove last year.

True, but perhaps a bit more in line with what some of the other folks might want.  The main thing missing is the surf zone aspect which almost everyone, without exception, would like help with.  I'll continue to work with Sean to see if they are putting together a follow up class.

Looks like CCK is putting together a class in February.  Refer to this thread:

I've also contacted Sean over at CCK to see if he has more info.

If I can get the time off and doesn't interfere with my days with my daughter I would be game.  Not sure if my little evo can keep up with all the longer boats though.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: G Loomis NRX fly rod for saltwater
« on: November 13, 2014, 09:06:49 PM »
Maybe not the next time, but perhaps the time after that.  My rod is arriving next Wednesday.  Still need to get some appropriate flies.  Used to tie my own for freshwater, but those were size 16 to 22.  Purchasing some material to attempt to tie some large clousers on size 2 hooks.  We'll see how that works out.

By the way, how do you secure your rod?  Do you use a rod leash or is there some way to float the rod?  Thanks!

Looks like we have six (including myself) so far.  I haven't heard from Bowmen yet, also BigJim said he might be interested if it was sometime next year.  Let me know so I can start setting this up again.  I'm thinking that most folks would still like this to happen on the weekend?  It will most likely be on a Sunday since, a lot of the CCK group classes are on Saturday.

Kayak Fly Fishing / G Loomis NRX fly rod for saltwater
« on: November 13, 2014, 10:12:39 AM »
Hi All,

Anyone have any opinions on the G Loomis NRX 9 wt fly rod?  Also, would it be appropriate for rock fish and ling cod fishing?  Thanks!

So between the responses I've gotten from the folks on the thread and discussions with CCK, the folks at CCK would like to postpone this until sometime in January or February.  They also think that the conditions in those months will be better for such a class.  Given this change in scheduling, does anyone else want to join?  Also, for those who are still interested a list of available dates for those two months would be very helpful as well.  Sorry for the confusion, but trying to coordinate schedules with all the various folks has been less straight forward than I would have liked.  Thanks!

Stealth / Re: Thigh Straps on Stealth Evolution 430?
« on: November 06, 2014, 10:00:59 AM »
Was thinking of doing the same but haven't really looked into the mounting thing. Did you inquire with Dan at headwaters about the potential?

Yeah, I left an email with Headwaters yesterday, still waiting on a reply.  With the deep leg wells and seating, I'm not sure where to place the padeyes so that I am able to lock the straps with my legs appropriately.  Finally, there is the issue of where the strongest attachment points would be.

I have a pair of thigh straps I am looking to unload let me know

Thanks I'll keep them in mind.  Still need to figure out the best way to attach them to my kayak.
