awesome. great post. glad you are okay.

I was surfing pleasure point this morning while you were getting bit,  :smt006.

I think ken was catching wsb #2 of 2 attempts,  :smt001

the revo has fins on bottom? or it's a paddle yak?

who am I? yeah, I started that big long shark thread.. yep, I bet bill this would happen some day, before the first one happened. unfortunately dan's incident meant that bill and I ate sushi and he paid. not that I'm happy about it, but reality is reality. each year the number of sharks increases. so do the number of yakkers. it's not like detecting the higgs bosun or something.

Harry and Ted, that is quite an excellent adventure. very well told. glad you guys are okay. but yeah, it's not too big of a surprise really,  :smt012

Btw Mooch, you will see an ab diver died on that same spot sept 15 1984. omar conger. page 92 of ralph's book. shallow water. very similar sized shark.

Also, sharks are seen at waddel, but in general us surfers are in shallower water than any kayak. it's a big wave that breaks in 20 feet of water. a wave generally breaks in water that is 1.5 times its height (more or less), so you'd need a 14 foot swell to break in 20 feet of water.

Is adam going to change his handle? fishhunted sounds good to me,  :smt002

Dan got flung clear and had to swim back. sounds like adam didn't get launched from the yak on the hit?

scott, line is cheap, what were you thinking?  :smt005

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Any one Try This Paddle?

looks like a great paddle. I use an onno one piece with a small blade (he calles it a feather I think). probably similar feel.

cool post scott.

apparently the magnets usually work by generating an 'eddy current' via some serious electro-magnetic voodoo and it operates on non-ferrous metals, just need a conducting metal (repetetively redundant,  :smt002). the bearings should be independent of the magnetic brake unless avet decided to do something very different than everybody else.

I'm very happy with my 2 piece rods and being able to stow them in my hatch.

I will say that the spiral wrap is an especially good choice for a 2 piece cause there is no chance of the rod twisting.

scott, your rods always look like a real pleasure to fish with!

Kinda funny but I never got stuck in baja either in the same truck.  But towing a trailer is when it seems to get buried. I could have aired down, but it wouldn't have helped this time, we were to the frame in sugar sand.  I bought the truck when I had a long commute, now my commute is 4 miles, and many days I just ride my bike.  I would love to have a 4wd...someday!

hey, if you do get stuck in baja, just wait for the sentra to come by!

I remember being camped somewhere in the middle of nowhere down there, a guy walks up to me, asks if I have a 'bomba', I was like hmmm, what the heck is that, he wants a bomb!?!? Well, a bomba is a bicycle pump...  :smt005 and sure enough I actually had one (although it would have taken three days to pump up one of my 75r15 all-terrain TAs by hand..) ! I give it to him and he walks off into the sunset through the desert. 3 hours later, a sentra loaded down with 4 guys comes by in the dark and they drop off the pump and drive off into the night

well with a trailer you are a 6x4 so kinda sounds like you are due for a 4x4, :-)

seems like you are due a new 4x4, :-).

I didn't take any, I was too busy trying to get myself unstuck, but Redyak was EAGER to document my situation.  I am sure he will post some pics. I need 4wd, that was about the 5th or 6th time I have gotten stuck in the sissy truck.

Great report. There is always a lot of on-line snivelling and whining and meanwhile some people are just out having fun!

4WD does help, but costs money and gas. disclaimer: I have had a 4wd truck at my disposal for the last 15 years and dont regret it.

Seems like those two wheeled drive nissan sentras with 4 mexicans and a bicycle pump can get through anything in baja. stuck? everybody jump out and push after letting some air out of the tires. when you hit hardpan, pump the tires back up. repeat,  :smt004

I'm with Allen on this clean water and salt is hard to beat. I've experimented with jalapenos, wasabi, curry powder etc etc and I think the sea salt is the best. You can always add other flavors later when you open the can.

Right now your goal should be to eat as much of it as possible both raw and seared while you work on canning/smoking the rest. I like to keep the loins on a plate in the fridge with saran wrap over them but not too tight. This way they stay dry and firmer than sitting in their own moisture in a Ziplock bag. It seems to help them keep longer in the fridge.

Try coating a loin in fresh coarse ground salt and pepper and then rolling it in sesame seeds before searing it for about a minute in a smoking hot cast iron pan. Not a minute per side but a minute or less total for all sides. Slice thin with your best knife and serve it with wasabi and soy. Trust me you won't have any complaints!

-Eliot

you can just roll it in prepared rice seasoning mixture which is nori, sesame seeds, salt and sugar...

I had a blast catching 'dines outside SC harbor last saturday. They were thick out there.

I wanted to keep a few & try 'em grilled like that, but no ice=no keeping 'dines for the table :smt012. I'll try it again sometime.

BTW-my 2yr old bait tube got it's first test & success :smt003! It kept 4-5 dines alive for a few hours.

My variation on keeping sardines edible was to have a small bucket/cooler and a blu-ice thing in it, then fill cooler/bucket with some seawater and keep the deans in that after gutting and gilling them on the water. It's easy to have at least water frozen in containers in the freezer if you don't have ice available so I always have a few of those on hand.

We are hella white n suburban in my house but they were all eaten anyways

salted and grilled and yes they are really good but you do have to be patient with the bones or be HAC and just eat them.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: "New School" power supply upgrade!
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:54:46 PM »
Thank you very much for sharing fishshim on the battery upgrade. I have been
doing some research myself on how to cut back on battery weight. Although I love
the many days of fishing without charging the battery in between, it is just to
heavy to be carrying around. It is the Cabelas 12v 8amp.

Thanks again,
Jedmo

I use that cabalas battery. it is a tank, but it's pretty cool to fish all summer on one charge,  :smt002

But one of these days I will upgrade to something fancy like the shim's beauty.

I own many dexter russells but this one is by far my favorite fillet knife

http://www.crkt.com/bigeddy_.html

I bought this knife a while back and it was great until I needed to sharpen it. The combo 40 degree on one side and flat on the other makes re-sharpening a pain.  :smt009
I've been considering a Forschner or a Dexter Russell...

If you take your DR and bend it so that it is cambered, it does the same thing as the fancy assymetrical one..

you put a bend in it so that when you put the sideways pressure on when skinning it bends it back to flat..

andrew, I have one. I use it for BH, but not other places where sharks are probably just as likely.

But you have already done so many stupid things and survived I think you should stay away from them,  :smt002.
