This year the tournament saw over 100 skilled kayakers paddle out to compete for the top spot, showing off their fishing skills in beautiful Monterey Bay. The event wasn’t just about the competition, though—it was also a chance to give back! The tournament held an amazing raffle with all proceeds supporting Kayak Fishing for Beginners, a non-profit dedicated to helping new anglers, veterans and people with disabilities experience the joy of kayak fishing.

As always, the event was filled with great food, a fantastic potluck, and an unforgettable after-party that brought everyone together to celebrate a day well spent on the water.

In this episode of TLA, I embark on my first Tesla camping road trip to Gaviota, CA, in search of my spirit fish—the California Halibut. This stretch of the Central Coast is famous for its large California halibut, white sea bass, and the occasional great white shark—YIKES! I take an overnight trip along Highway 101, exploring various rest stops and destination chargers before diving into a challenging two-day fishing adventure, determined to catch my champion halibut—45 inches or bust! Along the way, I also discover the campgrounds and explore this stunning coastline of California for the first time. Join me for this fun-filled journey on this episode of TLA!

Welcome to this week's episode of TLA. In this episode, Thuy (Fishing 24/7) and I head out to the Santa Cruz Pier to net some anchovies for bait, food, and for Josh's mom. Josh's mom makes excellent fermented fish sauce and needs the freshest anchovies to create her signature fish sauce, which takes over a year to prepare! I just want to provide an update on the annual herring spawn. I stop doing the herring spawn thread here on NCKA but i do have an active one on my website and blog for those who are interested.

The herring are in the Bay. I got some decent reports from reliable sources that there are fish pushing in.  Can't say when they will spawn but just glad to know they are in the bay.  Good luck herring hunters. --TLA

Update 5/23/2023 This is the last week to register for the 2023 ARW halibut tournament to be eligible to buy event Merchandise, and receive a bag and goodies. Registration for the event will be closed after the 85 participant limit has been reached.

The California Canoe and Kayak Fishing Team has been working diligently to put on this event for the kayak fishing community. The King of the Wall title is up for grabs for the heaviest California Halibut at the Alameda Rock Wall!

Logistics for the event is still being put together by the Team at this time. Updates and event registration will open soon.
