Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Odd reading on fish finder. Help?

No, not using autodepth. (didn't even know it was an option)  I had set the range to 20 ft.  Seemed like most of the time the depth was accurate, except for when in water less than 5 ft deep.

Well, I didn't get a chance to review this thread before the weekend, but I did get a chance to play with the settings yesterday.  I was out at Lawson's Landing.  I turned off 'auto sensitivity' and set it to 95, according to the video posted above in this thread.  That seemed to help quite a bit- no more false bottom readings.  Yay!

Now what I noticed is that in shallow water, the depth reading seems to be pretty inaccurate.  I was in about 4.5 feet of water, but the depth reading on the sounder said water depth was 8-9 feet.  I know the 4.5 feet is reasonably accurate, as I gauged depth using my paddle.  The most obvious explanation is my transducer wasn't level, which is what I suspect.  Once I was home and rinsing the boat, I noticed the transducer was angled slightly- this has been an ongoing issue, getting the mount rigid enough.  I think I might have to put a plastic shim between the top of the transducer and the bottom of the hull to keep the transducer from shifting.

But hey, at least it looks like the false/double bottom issue has been sorted out.

@CptSloppywood-
Noted.  Filling the void was more of a 'last ditch' option if my issue was related to air bubbles due to the transducer install.   I'll try to adjust sensitivity first.  Hopefully that takes care of the issue.
Need to figure out how I can get a couple of hours to throw the boat in the water and do some testing.  Maybe the marina in Petaluma?  Although the river is pretty shallow, it'd probably be better to test in deeper water.

Looks like it might be a week or more before I can get it out in the water, but I'll try to adjust the sensitivity down a step or two and report back when time permits.
Thanks for the suggestions, folks!

The depth reading on the sounder read 40-ish feet, the line counter on the read said my depth was around 80 feet.

A couple of pictures of my install:
Transducer tucked up in the recess in the hull bottom.

It sticks down just a hair- maybe 1/4" below the bottom, but still protected by the keel ridge.  Thinking about trying to fill the open space in the recess with foam or something, to try to prevent air bubbles from causing issues.

Not sure how to adjust sensitivity, but I can probably figure it out.  One thing worth noting- I had this unit installed in my boat this summer- absolutely no issues with false bottom readings or anything else.  Fresh water (Lake Sonoma), depths from 8ft down to 180 or more.  Just a nice clear image.  Trying to figure out why installing it in a kayak in salt water would cause issues.

Only one other thing, which I'm not convinced is the problem- I'm using one of those Humminbird battery kits- a little lead-acid battery, I think 7.4 Amp-hours.  I had the voltage displaying on the screen, the entire time it was 12.7V or higher.  Made sure battery was fully charged.  My buddy thinks the Hook 7 might be pulling more power than the battery can handle, I don't think that's the case, and I don't think that's why the funny readings.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Odd reading on fish finder. Help?

Added a Hook 7 to my Viking Profish 440.  The yak has a recess in the bottom of the hull to mount the transducer.  This isn't mine,
 but picture for reference.

Anyway, both times I've taken it out, I've noticed that the depth reading on the Hook is about half of what the line counter says I'm in.  For example, line counter says 80 ft, sounder says between 35-40 feet.  The other odd thing is I'm getting what I can best describe as a 'double bottom'.  One bottom drawn at 35-40 feet, the other around 80 feet.

The transducer is mounted level, set to within 3/8-1/2" of the bottom of the kayak.  I don't think there's an air bubble or anything that would give a false reading like that.  I called the Lowrance rep, he didn't have any answers.

At this point, I'm wondering about using expansion foam to try to fill in the space 'above' the transducer in the hopes of eliminating any possible bubbles, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I'll try to take a picture of the existing mount when I get home, so you can see exactly what I'm dealing with.
Thanks,
Greg

Got any photos of your boat?  I'm still trying to figure out where the best place is to mount things.  So far I have plans to add a Starport up in front of the main storage area (where the TacklePod goes) using the stock inserts.  Probably put the fish finder there, and after that I've got nothing.  Of course I don't know what other gear I need.  Should probably use the search function, see if there's a kayak outfitting or needed gear thread.

I know this is an old topic, but given you've had it for a while, what are your thoughts on the TacklePod?  I just got a Profish 440, and there's a TacklePod available for it.  Trying to decide if it's worth the $$.
Thanks,
Greg

Introductions / Re: New to the boards and kayak fishing

Thank you both for the kind words.  Looking forward to learning from the collective wisdom.
I really do love the looks of the 440- the color scheme is fantastic, and the features on the boat look very well thought out- the square compartment just forward of the seat has a well for a battery and under the blue plug is a recessed area for mounting a transducer.  Lots of storage, 6 rod holders and the two round hatches behind the seat can function as dry storage or as  bait wells- each well has a scupper in it, allowing sea water in to keep live bail alive.

@CptSloppywood- how do you like the Reload?  Not that I'm having regrets or anything, but I'm seriously considering taking advantage of my employer's return policy to trade the 440 on the Reload.  Mainly to get the TacklePod and the closed bow area.  I think there's a TacklePod available for the 440, but I haven't been able to confirm that.

Introductions / New to the boards and kayak fishing
« on: August 14, 2017, 08:44:26 PM »
Greetings, all.
Greg here from Cotati checking in with my first post.  Recently purchased my first fishing kayak and I'm anxious to get out there and catch some fish.  Of course I know I've got a lot to learn, and I need to make sure I'm safe and well-prepared.  I work part time at a marine retailer, and I've been picking the brains of my coworkers and folks who come in for fishing related items.  Anyway, I'll probably be posting lots of questions so I can get out there and catch a few fish.
I assume that like most forums, photos are a good thing, so...

My Viking Profish 440

Hatch covers are stored in the garage.  Next project is to make a rack to hold the canoe and kayak, possibly with some sort of shade cloth or tarp as sun protection.

Apologies for the messy back yard.
Cheers,
G
