Recipes / World Cup cooking project - 32 nations, 1 kitchen
« on: June 16, 2010, 03:46:33 PM »
My wife and I are making at least one dish from each nation participating in the world cup.  I have a blog with photos at 32nations1kitchen.blogspot.com.  An example:

Tonight: Algeria

Algerian Harira - a traditional north African dish eaten during the month of Ramadan to break the fast and on other special occasions.

I soaked the chickpeas/garbanzo beans overnight.  I cooked and rinsed them, then prepared the stew.

I cut a pound of lamb

I heated olive oil, browned the lamb, and sauteed the onions and celery.

Added saffron, turmeric, fresh ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper tomatoes and chicken stock at intervals of a few minutes.  Simmered for 45 minutes.

Added chickpeas and lentils simmered for 20 minutes.

Added a thickener of tomato paste, flour, and water.  Simmered another 20 minutes until lentils are tender.

Serve with fresh cilantro, fresh parsley, and a lemon wedge.

Results:  Great success!  We haven't had much exposure to North African food before.  This is a spicy, flavorful stew.  We shared it at a small dinner party and it was a hit.  It is being added to the recipe book and we'd be happy to eat Algerian food again.

General Talk / Tsunami Advisory February 27, 2010
« on: February 27, 2010, 08:23:37 AM »
8.8 magnitude earthquake offshore Chile has generated a tsunami.  Estimated arrival time in our area is just after 1pm.

Wave heights have been generally < 5 feet, but everyone out fishing today should be aware and alert.

Too early to call 2010 the year of the earthquake?

Quote
... A tsunami advisory is in effect which includes the
coastal areas of California - Oregon - Washington - British
Columbia and Alaska from the California-Mexico border to
   Attu Alaska...

Persons in tsunami advisory areas should move out of the
water... off the beach and out of harbors and marinas.

Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing
strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near
water is imminent of expected. Significant widespread inundation
is not expected for areas in an advisory. Tsunamis are a series of
waves potentially dangerous several hours after initial arrival
time. Estimated times of initial wave arrival for selected

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Rigging out my newly acquired yak.
« on: June 29, 2009, 11:30:22 PM »
Hey ladies and gents-

I just bought a used Ocean Kayak peekaboo that I am planning to transform into a father/daughter paddling and fishing machine.  My daughter, just four years old, fell in love with the kayak we demo'd this last weekend.  Especially the plexi-window in the bottom of the boat.  I've been kicking around the idea of getting a kayak to fish from for a couple years and religiously lurk the fishing reports forum here for abking's fish reports and fish pr0n in general.

So, after taking the peekaboo out for a spin on Saturday, as we get back in the pickup, my daughter says "Daddy, I'm so happy now." and my wife's reaction to that, I knew it was my time to strike - I'm getting a kayak.  I took her out again on Sunday and we saw pelicans diving for baitfish.  She asked, "Daddy, can we catch a real fish?"  My reaction can only be summed up thusly:

Then, she reminded me that I have fishing poles in the garage.  I've promised her that yes, indeed we can catch a real fish.

My plans for Peekaboo (which is now the yak's official name):
-  install handles for her to hold on to
-  install a seat for her
-  plug the holes under my can - I'm (AHEM) big boned and the water comes up through the bottom for my sitting displeasure
-  install 2 rod holders.  I've looked at different types and am open to suggestion from someone that has outfit a boat like this for tooling around a lake catching trout with a pre-schooler riding shotgun

It will be a work in progress, eventually with running lights, fish finder, removable work area and other neat stuff.  Also figure that at some point I will want one of the mack pimp daddy boats that I see some of you have and this will become the wife's boat.  All in due time of course since we also have a one year old baby.

Also, I need suggestions for a waterproof camera.

This is gonna be fun.
