General Talk / Re: Paddle vs Pedal vs Sailing Fishing Tactics
« on: May 03, 2023, 11:39:48 AM »
I like my paddle yak (Stealth Fisha 555) for:

- surf launch/landing, rough conditions prowess

- that feeling of connection with the water

- upper body/core excercise

I like my peddle yak (Compass) for:

- Trolling (w/o) downrigger. yes a real paddle yak ninja can make it work, but it's far more convenient to generate forward momentum with the legs while letting the line out with the rod in hand

- Trolling with a downrigger

- wanting to have a chill day of sitting in a lawn chair while drifting/jigging for bottom fish

Nice chart, Li-Orca.

In your opinion, what is the optimal differential, or range of differentials, for finding halibut?

$100 that's a great deal!

Don't you still need to apply gel coat or paint to seal the fiberglass and protect from UV?

It's definitely waterproof and solid in its current state. No idea about UV though...

UPDATE:

After soliciting everyone's advice (thank you!) and assessing my confidence, skill, and expectations, I decided to have it repaired professionally by a surfboard repair guy in SF. He reinforced the underside and laid some new fiber over the top. He enlarged the hole a bit to accommodate the larger diameter rod holder I wanted. I was shocked that this repair cost only $100 and was done in less than 48 hours.

Mike spent 17 years in Baja, much of it fishing from his Whaler. He understands boating and fishing and will happily talk shop with you about any of it.

CA Regulations / Re: Trolling motor Violation???
« on: December 27, 2022, 03:32:53 PM »
Thinking of getting a trolling motor and not doing the CA Registration. Does anyone know how much the violation or fine would be?

What happens with the catch me if you can attitude?  I'm the type of person who drives in the commuter lane waiting for my ticket.

What do you guys think?

If you also pee on the toilet seat in public restrooms, please stop.

I think you should get the fuck out of the HOV lane.

Stealth / Re: FF Wiring Question

That’s a lot of help. Thanks!

A few more thoughts:

1. you probably don't need as big a hole as I made. I had a thru-hull wire kit that had that size "plug," so that's what I did.

2. I was told that the type of bit I used was not ideal and that I'd be better off with a hole saw. I didn't want to buy a hole saw bit so I used what I had. I put a piece of wood behind it when I drilled (to avoid it splitting/cracking on the exit) and drilled very slowly. I practiced on a cheap rubber tote first, just to get my confidence up :)

You can see here how I drilled through the hatch lid on my Fisha:

Is the ProFisha lid more "delicate" than that on the Fisha. If so, I'm pretty sure Eddie drilled through his PF lid and will see this thread soon enough :)

I really have no experience with fiberglass, but the thought of using what look like deck screws to mount things seems a bit odd to me.  Is that really the best way?  Why not rivets or well-nuts, or at least machine screws with lock-nuts?

Agreed. It's a disappointment. I hope to reinforce the underside w/ marine plywood (or similar) and replace the screws w rivets or bolts w/a lock washer. Maybe even bluekayaks's upside-down bolt idea...

I had emailed Stealth about my damage and finally heard back from them. This is what they had to say:

Quote
nothing to major.

Behind the rod holder itself is some reinforcing for the screws so i would do it this way.

First i would fix up the small cracked area with some basic fiberglass repairs just to make it all the same level again.
Then fill all the old whole up with some nice thick epoxy.even the thick epoxy you buy from a hardware store- the glue style will do the trick to fill the holes,No need to buy epoxy resin and thicken it.
Then reposition the rod holder at a slightly different angle to the last time so you can set it.By changing the angle slightly you will screw in new holes and it will bite into fibreglass nicely.Don't forget to use silicone around the rod holder when you screw it back in to seal it.

hope this all makes send and helps.

To prevent additional damage stow everything you can and don't launch or land with items in your rod holders.

My used Stealth came with that same damage, to repair and reinforce the rod holders I cut a doughnut shaped backer of PVC out of a 4" white pipe cap. I then cut the PVC from the outside to the hole in the "doughnut" so I could "thread" the backer into the rod hold and attached it to the inside of the hull around where the rod holder mounts with epoxy mixed with filler.

This makes it much stronger but of course then it would cause even more damage if your roll with things in your rod holders so it's even more imperative to make sure that doesn't happen.

I think it's a good idea to learn to do these types of repairs if your running a crispy kayak.

cool idea w the PVC doughnuts. can you describe the "filler" you mized with the epoxy? thanks!

Thank you for the reminders to stow my gear inside the boat. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way to get three ambush hoops in there.

(I had been using the gaff in one of the holders, and lengths of PVC in the other, to secure the traps.)
