Kayak Fly Fishing / East walker late report
« on: November 12, 2023, 09:04:57 PM »
This is a late report for a trip I made with my brother to east walker in mid October.

We showed up midday and fished 2.5 days on the river. The amount of people fishing during that time was insane! It was hard to find anywhere to fish and had to either fish behind several guys or fish undesirable spots. We were still able to connect with a good number of fish during the trip but it was mostly small browns around 8"-12" or planted rainbows that got washed down from the reservoir.

We did end up hooking a few nice browns with some coming off at the net and others shaking the hook when they decided to get airborne. We were catching them on a variety of nymphs in both fast and slow water.

When we were able to find a little elbow room the river was fishing good. Too bad they close it now for the winter months. Hopefully the browns pack on a little weight during the off season. I'll have a video of the trip up in a few weeks.

Hit the forebay on 11-10-23 from midday until sunset. I spent the first few hours cranking and throwing soft plastics up shallow hoping a few bass were still up feeding before they commit to going out deep. I missed a solid 3 pounder at the yak and had about a 4 pounder chase it up but didn't commit.

I ended up catching adecent striper on a squarebill up shallow and hooked into a big fish shortly after but it came off before I got a look. I figured it was a big striper by the fight it had and the next cast confirmed my suspicion. I had another solid hit but missed the fish and had a 10 to 12 pound striper chase the lure all the way to the yak. I switched back over the a SPRO little John and moved out to the deeper edge of the flats hoping for some stripers.

I ended up getting a bass finally, an American shad (first out of the forebay for me) and got into a handful more schoolie size stripers. The fly fishermen that were working the deeper parts of the flats did very well on the stripers throughout the day but the trolleys had a hard time.

I'll post a link to the video here or you can check it out on my YouTube channel at bucksnboils.

Does the White Spanish Bullet imitate a scud?
Headed to Crowley. Just finished tying a bunch of double bead-head chronomids.

Kinda I suppose but I know it's working pretty good this year. I didn't fish crowley but I did do very well on it in owens river so it might do alright in the lake.

Well, looks like they still won't upload correct. There are supposed to be a few decent 12 to 14in rainbows in there

I spent a few days bouncing around the eastern sierras in early July. Just about every lake was over capacity of water and the rivers/creeks were flowing high and dirty. It made it difficult to find places to fly fish but I was able to get in on a few spots. East walker was high but I caught a few fish in the spots I could reach. Owens kicked out a few small wild rainbows and browns along with a ton of big planters left over from independence day. I got a few casts in on some other smaller spots to include robinson creek. Everything produced fish but another 2 or 3 weeks and the fishing conditions should be in good shape over there.

Size 16 white Spanish bullet with a pink hot spot was the number one producer. Just about anything in black was picking up fish too with the dirty conditions.

Well unfortunately I didn't get any pics. Went over the the forebay for some fishing with my dad but there was a nasty accident on Pacheco pass that delayed us quite a bit. A chopper came in to pick up one if the victims, hopefully everything worked out.

Launched near the doc around 0800hrs and started with shallow diving cranks. Hit a few fish but eventually had to switch to a drop shot. The bite wasn't on fire but it was consistent. Got a mix of dropshot and crankbait fish throughout the day. I didn't fish for stripers but I didn't see them busting bait anywhere during my travels.

The video is on YouTube and here is the link

The only thing I've had to do over the years is heavy rinsing after use but if something gets gummed up, I have had good success soaking the item in warm/hot water then I usually add some fresh lubricant.

That does work but I was hoping the fix was less time consuming.  It is what it is I guess,  thanks.

So I have been having issues being able to post or view video posts on here for the last few months. It didn't used to be an issue but now it is. I was curious if anyone else has experienced this and if it can be fixed.

Nice. San luis reservoir, love it. You never know what size striper you gonna get. Some beasts in there.

Yup, they are supposed to have that side closed down for quite some time for the add on they are doing. I liked launching the yak on that side too since it was close to some good areas.

I was up the street a few weeks ago and ran into a camper who said the Basalt was closed to camping. Said they were doing work to the dam so that it would hold more water.

Nice job hooking that one with the bucktail.
