General Talk / Re: Breakers in the SC harbor« on: March 19, 2024, 01:44:26 PM »
Looks like the dredge is back in action. Been watching the cams for a few days and looking for an opportunity to sneak out after work. Saw a few kayaks here and there turn back after some consideration at the harbor mouth.

General Talk / Breakers in the SC harbor« on: March 17, 2024, 10:34:25 AM »
Was checking out the webcams and surf reports today and noticed some waves breaking inside the end of the harbor. Maybe it needs a good dredging. Also saw someone launching their red sailing kayak and enjoyed a moment of excitement as it exited the harbor along with a smaller paddle yak and had to climb a wave or two.
This was around 10:30. Anybody recognize their boat? 5

A rockfish trip on a party boat out of Half Moon Bay last year was ~$170. Add tips and rigs, fish cleaning, and it’s approaching $200. If party boat limits were cut to 5, that’s close to $40 per fish and hoping you get a ling or two. This expense is part of what drove lots of people from party boats and rentals to kayaks. Then the inshore closures screwed the kayak situation up. Curious what comes next

On their website, the Knob Hill squid are $6.66 per pound. The mark of the beast, so they must be for big fish!

Remember that the people proposing the new MPAs will need a project next year, and the year after that, etc. Their projects will not involve adding fishing opportunities. Only mother nature can do that. The quillbacks are fine, rockfish and lings are abundant, and there's no actual problem for these clowns to address, but they've become more aggressive about restricting fishing and crabbing anyway.
These people are either politically compromised, easily manipulated by pressure, or true believers raised on every nature show telling them the ocean is dying because of fisherman. If there are no "problems" for them to address, they'll make things up and that's exactly what the new MPAs are. It's just the latest made-up cause. They want to reduce fishing opportunities gradually while saying that's not what they are doing. If limits are cut, that's not coming back. If MPAs are established, the fishing opportunities aren't coming back. 10
Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Squid source near Scotts Valley« on: March 04, 2024, 11:21:01 AM »Either Safeway or Nob Hill should have the 3lb frozen squid box for I think 20$ or so. Not sure of any place closer, can always go Bayside Marine, or the wharf. Thanks and I'll check out Safeway and Knob Hill! 11

Since moving over the winter, I'm not sure where to get a decent deal on squid and it's time to quit bitching and get to fishing. San Jose had a nice price per box at Bass Pro, but it would be nice to skip that drive if possible.
Anyone know where to stock up on squidcicles in Scotts Valley? 12
General Fishing Tips / Re: best place for beginning kayaker to fish the ocean« on: March 01, 2024, 08:42:50 AM »
Get out early. Wind and chop usually increase by lunchtime. Go near other people in case something goes wrong.

You didn’t make it about me and did offer a direct counter to my statement, which is fabulous. There’s obviously nothing personal about that, but it did seem a little beside the point after I attempted to clarify that I was referring to the Quillback-related split season depth restrictions. All good bro.
I have failed to be precise and specific throughout this thread in expressing my frustration because it comes from an overall overarching lack of trust. Would be thrilled beyond measure to be wrong about all of this. Hopefully the benevolent, people-loving folks who are making our fishing rules aren’t as full of crap as they seem to be. Fishing is the only thing I have in my life for my mental health and it’s beyond important. Not being allowed to fish for some Browns in Capitola, or for a lingcod out of the harbor in Santa Cruz because some Quillback many many miles away may or may not have an issue was complete nonsense last year no matter how you frame it. 14
CA Regulations / Re: Summary of Recreational Fishing Regulations for Federal Groundfish« on: February 15, 2024, 02:26:02 PM »Did you guys just start fishing last year? Because that’s what it sounds like—please have some perspective. I’ve only been paying attention to RCG regs since ~1999. And guess what: the regs for seasons/depth/posession limits change every few years. That’s how the adaptive management system works. Would you prefer the alternative? A system that does not adapt to the constantly-changing population of various species."So the question about returning to seasons without depth restrictions is stupid." Thanks for that helpful addition to the discussion. Perhaps I should have been more specific about the quillback-related depth restrictions, and I also remember the deeper water being closed for many years. There's a well-worn history of bureaucracies taking power for real or imagined "problems" and then never giving that power back, but go ahead and dismiss concerns over that sort of thing as "stupid" if it makes you feel good. In fact, insulting people with different views, like you did here, is totally awesome, especially for the "global moderator" of an open forum. If feeling superior to others is what you need, i'm glad to help give you the opportunity. He's totally insulting people with different views, regardless of you attempting to gaslight about it. And I can point it out. And he can take it. Claiming it isn't happening is different though. And I even clarified what i meant about the depth restrictions, yet you think you're dunking on me by mentioning the deep water. Have a great day, friends, and I hope we can go fishing soon. 15
CA Regulations / Re: Halibut changes… permanent?« on: February 15, 2024, 01:41:04 PM »Does anybody truly believe the emergency action to reduce CA halibut take to 2 is permanent? Because it is NOT permanent. That sort of ends this entire discussion. If you’ve been fishing & paying attention for long enough, you will see bag limits/minimum sizes/methods of take/etc are constantly changing. I appreciate the adaptive management approach the dept has been using the last 15yrs. The opposite/alternative would be to keep the same regs each season, regardless of the fishery health. That sounds worse, right?
