If I only live closer...
Moo, I can pick it up for you in May.

I picked up one of these descenders from Amazon. Makes it easy to release them at the right depths. Just set the depth you want them to be released at and then drop it down.

Dang that’s nice.  I have one of those grippers.  Mod life?  I wonder if there are any government funds to subsidize that purchase. :smt005 :smt006
Hi Eddie

I know that CDFW distributed descenders for free previously, and I discussed with CDFW staff to get some for our group, but they stated that they don't have any funding for the program.
Hopefully, we can get some later.

Thank you Paul, the information you gave is great, I'll have to digest it. This will be new for me as last year we just fished off a boat. looking forward to a kayak adventure. I'll review the past post and look for the GPS points, I may have some questions to post, thanks again for your work on this, R.
Hi Ron

We should chase some rockfish and halibut together, this season.

Thanks for the info!

SFD looks super-simple. But, are we really supposed to use a descending device, even if fish are caught in relatively shallow water? I usually fish for for bigger game, and generally barbless. I've released vast numbers of RF bycatch, and it's always no-touch--just grab the hook and shake. It seems to me that a descending device will have a lot more chance of harming the fish than what I do, with no possible benefit, at least in shallow(ish) water.

No I'm sure if it goes down easy like you said a few shakes and it goes , that's the best way anyway. As far as harming effect if its bad enough its lingcod/shark bait.
Can you imagine the look on that lingcod when it sees a large fish being shaken as you yank on the descending device. LOL heck it might be worth putting a lure on above the descending device and leave it there after you yank the other fish off eh? never know.

This will work with smaller fish.
I don't think that will work if the fish has barotrauma.  You wont be able to send a bloated fish down with only a couple of ounces, you need something over 6oz and more is better/easier to descend.

I attached a large Snap Swivel to adding additional weights simpler.

Thanks for the update Paul
and thank you for all the work you put into this

May 1 is my new christmas :)

You guys are very welcome.
Lately, I have been watching many rockfishing-related videos to prepare for the season opener.
I can't wait to try some new techniques and jigs.

Did they say anything about Copper?
No, I didn't hear any.
I don't think there will be any changes for Copper.

Fish and Game Commission adopted the proposed in-season groundfish regulation change during the teleconference meeting on March 26, 2024

This is only a partial victory, and we will continue to seek an exception for the Non-Motorized Vessels to provide us equal access time as power boaters.  Thank you to all workgroup members and other supporters.

You can watch the meeting video recording: https://cal-span.org/meeting/cfg_20240326/

This change must go through the California and Federal administration process and is expected to be effective in early April 2024.  Make sure you verify that the season is officially open prior to going fishing in Apri.

1. Season structure (See Table 1 for the summary)

In the Northern, Mendocino, San Francisco, and the Central-North of 36° N latitude GMAs, the season structure is proposed as:
• closed January through March;
• open seaward of the 50-fathom boundary line for shelf rockfish, slope rockfish, and lingcod in April, October, and December; and
• open shoreward of the newly-established 20-fathom boundary line in May through September, and November.

In the Central-South of 36° N latitude and Southern GMAs, the season structure is proposed as:
• closed January through March;
• open in all depths April through June;
• open shoreward of the 50-fathom boundary line July through September; and
• open seaward of the 50-fathom boundary line for shelf rockfish, slope rockfish, and lingcod October through December.

2. Descending Devices: No person shall take or possess any federal groundfish as defined in Section 1.91 and all greenlings of the genus Hexagrammos from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters without having a descending device in possession and available for immediate use to assist in releasing rockfish to the depth of capture.

Three major descending devices are currently available for purchase, and I want to share what I know of them.  Some people use homemade ones, too.

Is there a data based reason for this change?  I have a feeling that it's exploratory management.

I didn't follow the vermilion issue closely, but they did run a model to estimate Total Mortality vs. Harvest Limit.

Also, it seems Navionics should fix their problem, especially when they had just up'd their annual subscription to 50 bucks.

ouch, I haven't purchased the app yet (hate subscriptions) almost had myself over the hump on $25...but I won't pay $50 for a different presentation of data provided free by the government.

it would be cool to add the line as Paul is doing though, good for situational awareness.

I have enjoyed using their Relief Shading overlay option for the last two years, but I don't think it is worth $50 per year.
I plan not to renew my subscription when it expires in July 2024.

I am reviving an old topic now since we have to be outside the 50 ftm or within the 20 ftm line for the upcoming rockfish season.
Was anyone successful in importing these lines into the Navionics Boating App?
If yes how?
Thanks!

I have 50fa w MLPA converted to Navionics App file format by AlsHobieOutback. The 20fa file is in general GPX file format and cannot be imported directly into the Navionics App, but you should be able to import it into your fish finder.

You will see all the downloadable GPX files on this website: https://paul95255.wixsite.com/non-motorized-vessel

I searched the web but can't find a map that shows the devide line between California Central-N and Cetral-S of 36degree.  Appreciate if someone can post it here.

Hi Sonny

I have attached a blown-up view of the 36° N latitude line.

Thanks Paul.  I am trying to find out if Monterey County is North or South of the 36° line.

Hopefully, someone can develop a fish identification app linked to the applicable regulations.
By taking a photo of a fish, it can tell species, size, (automatically capture GPS coordinate and date) and tell me if I can keep the fish or not and how many.

This would be a great project for one of my CS students, I'll try to pitch it and see if I can get any takers. It would be interesting to see how accurately fish can be ID'ed from pictures. I suspect there would be quite a few ambiguous cases, but at least the app could then tell you what to look for to distinguish between the possibilities...

We might start by collecting rockfish photos. If we make serious progress, we might be able to pursue grants from CDFW, PFMC, or CCA.  Additionally, it could provide a fishing log function.  I know ESRI/Survey123 has a fishing log app.  I want to assist people unfamiliar with CDFW regulations, which are overly complicated.  As I stated before you need a PhD to understand our regulations.

Update: NVM, App works offline  :smt007 :smt007

What do you do if you have no signal? Is screenshot of your license sufficient enough? Just installed the app.

Here is the offline instruction:

While connected to the internet and viewing the Welcome screen, tap Click here to refresh located in the upper right corner of the screen. This ensures your current licenses and validations are saved within the app and are available for offline use.

No. Pictures or screenshots of licenses are not valid. Pursuant to California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Section 700.4(f)(opens in new tab), licenses displayed electronically must be displayed through the CDFW License App. However, the CDFW License App stores licenses within the app for display when there is no internet connectivity via cellular service or wi-fi.

Here is the link to the detail instruction: https://wildlife.ca.gov/LicenseApp?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#603364115-will-a-screenshot-of-my-fishing-license-displayed-on-the-cdfw-license-app-be-acceptable-when-there-is-no-cell-phone-service
