General Fishing Tips / Halfmoon Bay South Jetty Tips?
« on: April 03, 2024, 10:09:45 AM »
I always wanted to try crab snaring out on the HMB South Jetty.

Where should I park and what should I be concerned about? How far out should I go?

Should I be worried about high tide or swells? Appreciate any advice.

Places to Launch and Camp / Crab snaring beaches
« on: December 03, 2021, 09:10:43 AM »
Tough weekend for snaring at Baker. Me and the others around me got nothing.

I want to try OB but it's a large beach. Where do the anglers go to avoid the masses?

Any other good snaring beaches you would recommend?

Places to Launch and Camp / HMB - Where do I park and launch?

Probably a silly question for most of you but I have yet to launch out of HMB. Should I park and launch at Pillar Point Harbor? Will be dropping 2 hoops, any advice helps!

Hobie Kayaks / Newport Vessels Kayak Motor on Hobie Compass?
« on: October 12, 2021, 08:35:21 PM »
https://www.amazon.com/Newport-Vessels-Saltwater-Electric-Indicator/dp/B07455NBNL/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=newport%2Bvessels%2Btrolling%2Bmotor%2Bkayak&qid=1634094216&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-4&th=1

Anyone try one of these Newport Vessels Kayak Series trolling motors? I was hoping to put it through the cassette like this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/133900226812?hash=item1f2d1350fc:g:xSwAAOSwFz1g8a0X

If you have used this motor before, a review would be appreciated before I pull the trigger. Thanks.

Was hearing from the reports the bite was slowing down but still no word from LM/Rockaway so I went for it.

Mostly stayed 60-70 FOW about 35 pulls down, only jellies. Later in the day I saw 4-5 boats chasing some birds so I joined em at 130 FOW, which is the deepest I have gone so far. Tons and tons of bait but none of the boats I spoke to had a fish. Only the birds showed up today.

Also, randomly, around 10 oclock it just started absolutely blowing for ~20 minutes out of nowhere. Almost went over a couple of times, then it just went away and didn't return. It was strange but I was scared. Not sure if it was in the forecast but I guess that's why you check hourly!

3 rockfish hit my anchovy over the day so at least some fish enjoyed my efforts   :smt044

General Talk / How to identify unsafe conditions?
« on: August 05, 2021, 07:27:44 PM »
I haven't spent enough time in the ocean to identify when its unsafe for kayaks. Looking at these forecasts for this weekend:

https://magicseaweed.com/Linda-Mar-Pacifica-Surf-Report/819/

https://magicseaweed.com/Salmon-Creek-Surf-Report/306/

Are these conditions safe to go out in?

Are there any rule of thumbs you have for when it's unsafe?

Trolling in 60 feet of water, 45  feet deep as someone on the forums said to do to avoid jelly and it worked well, less than half the jelly than when I fished in 100 fow. Line starts moving so I start reeling and sure enough something is fighting. I remember the advice given to me, exhaust it, fight it for 10 minutes if you have to. So I am in no rush, this thing is running. I get it to the yak once and it is having none of it so dives again. Really letting it take its time. I get it to the boat again and I see it, good size, 15-20 lbs if I had to guess.

And then shes gone. No dramatic headshake, no jump, line just went loose. Nothing broke, no hooks bent, no broken leaders, just gone. I feel like bites like that are super rare so Im afraid I missed my only chance at kayak salmon!

I was able to catch a small ling cod shortly after and I think I had another salmon bite but it took my bait and escaped before I could pick up the rod. I spent an extra hour and a half over when I was planning to return. Losing a fish like that gets you motivated for another. Going to try again tomorrow but that was a rough one.

I was using a brined krippled anchovy and a flasher.

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie Compass Turbo Fin Upgrades
« on: May 09, 2021, 08:46:59 PM »
Hi, I want to upgrade to the turbo fins because that bay tide is tough to beat. My drive has the kickup fins, but NOT the 180.

Is this what I need?: https://www.amazon.com/Hobie-Turbo-Fin-Kit-72067032/dp/B085118DMP/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Turbo+fins+hobie&qid=1620618123&sr=8-5

Does that have all the required parts to upgrade? If not, what am I looking for?

Went 4/17 and 4/24

4/17 - Warm, Low tide, bait was bitten a few times, pulled up 1 18in over 3 hours of trolling

4/24 - Cold/Windy, High tide, only 1 bite over 3 hours of trolling, 26in got it up to the boat before it got off (rookie handling)

Not as great of a bite as Oyster or ARW but it's a nicer view and close to Marin residents.

Kayaks / Gear track phone mount?
« on: April 12, 2021, 06:19:20 PM »
Using my phone for GPS and marking spots but I can't find a gear track phone mount solution

I was able to Frankenstein one out of RAM parts on Amazon but it is expensive

[Marin] Kayak has mostly been stored for the winter but hoping to get out tomorrow if it doesn't get any colder.

I see 1000 youtubers have been hitting up Alameda Rockwall for halibut, I am guessing it's too early to go for those in San Pablo Bay? What else could I go for, striper? Planning to launch from McNears Beach unless that idea is stupid.

Hi, still pretty new to ocean kayaking but one of my favorite surf spots was Black Sands Beach hidden away in the Headlands.

https://goo.gl/maps/qix74JmZWbZFHM6K7

Had good luck with rock crab and rock fish from the surf, and one time I saw someone cruise by on a hobie. Any idea where I could launch to fish these locations from the kayak? I would love to fish my favorite surf spot from the other side.
