It's last minute, but I am meeting a diving buddy from Fort Bragg at Caspar tomorrow at 0800 to do a shore dive and then some kayak fishing after the dive.  I found a nice reef last year outside of there that was holding lots of lings, but I found it on my last trip of the year.  Anyway, will probably be kayaking by 0930 or 1000 until the wind comes up too much, probabaly 11 or 12.  If you don't know, it is just north of the Cabrillo Lighthouse just south of the town of Fort Bragg.  Parking on the beach side of the road, across from the campround.  Later....

That's awesome, thanks for the pics.  My 11 year old and I will be heading up that way in mid and late July this year, I can't wait to spend some time up there in the boats.

Nice report Jack, thanks for the cool pics.  I hope to get out there and destinations north of there in a few weeks when I get back from a work trip.  I have a lot of vacation time this summer and will be up that way alot, thanks for wetting my appetite.... :smt003

Nice day on the water and cool pics.

Treefish are common the further south you get.  Lots of them out around Catalina, San Clemente and the other channel islands down off So Cal.  Usually not too deep, catch quite a few incidentally when fishing calico bass in the kelp down there.  They especially love squid.  I agree on the taste, usually not big, but very tasty critters.

Excellent day at Sonoma.  I was wondering how the Yorty arm has been biting, guess I know now....

Thanks for the report!

That sounds sweet Fred.  Hope you and your brother have a great trip!  I keep looking at Albion every time I go over the bridge, but have yet to go out of there.  Unfortunately,  I will be working all next week but if you will still be there next weekend, I will likely be prowling around up that way.  Let me know when you plan to depart from up there, would be great to meet you.  Enjoy the time with your family!!

Good Job Teleni,

I was at Van Damme that morning as well, with two friends from Fort Bragg.  Normally we dive from the kayaks there, but it was kind of a last minute thing and we just went in off the beach.  I saw a solo guy out there when we first went out and my friend Josh was talking to him, maybe you??  Anyway, drop me a line when you need a dive partner for there, I live only 1 hour and 45 from there, so I can easily do day trips there.  Rockfish starting next week, so I will be making several launches there to try some of my favorite spots, I'll post when going.  Take care,

Norm

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Big River Crabbing
« on: March 28, 2008, 09:13:49 PM »
Hello Folks,

It's been a while since I have been on, haven't been hitting the water much due to a new job that has me commuting from Windsor to Alameda, but that will eventually turn into a less than 5 day a week thing.

Anyway, my gromit(10 year old Drew) headed up to Big river yesterday to give one of our "secret" crab spots a try.  We set two pots in the last 1/2 mile or so of the river before it hits the ocean.  We have done really well in there before, but sometimes it is overrun with the nursery size dungies.

While waiting for the pots to soak, we played baseball on the beach and enjoyed the sunshine and 60 degree temp.  Did two soaks for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours each and both times had full pots of shorts.  One soak under the highway 1 bridge ended up with about 30 of the 3 to 5 inchers in the pot.  Only one keeper out of the attempts, so we let that one go for karma sake.

Even though the crabbing was not excellent, the company, the weather, river paddling, and beach baseball were stallar!!

Antiously awating Ab and bottom fish season........see you on the water!!

That is awesome Janice, nice work.

Ramon, this is not the Russian Gulch just north of Jenner, this Russian Gulch is just south of Fort Bragg, near Caspar Cove.  A little further, but a much nicer place to launch......

Hey John,

I still use the megabait with the two Gamakatsu hooks dangling when doing the drift type fishing and managed a few random rockfish doing that at Caspar last time out.  I've started playing with the longer skinnier(8 or 10 inches) Benthos jigs that have a similar finish to the megabaits, but are more durable.  I found them at Sports Authority in Santa Rosa for about 7 or 8 bucks each, and they come pre-rigged with a hanging hook set up from the top eye.

With the swimbaits, I find it better to fish when the drift is not too fast.  I typically like to make long casts parallel to the structure, in the case of this last trip, a long slowly tapering point, let it sink to the bottom and then do a series of 10 or 12 slow cranks followed by a freespool trip back to the bottom.  I just keep repeating that until it gets vertical and then make another cast.  If I can get away with it, wind and current permitting, i like to use a 2 oz head, but will go bigger if need be.  I find that at least half of the bites come on the freespool drop back to the bottom so you have to keep an eye on the line as it sinks and if it jumps or ticks, put the reel in gear, wind up and swing....  When fishing without the fishfinder, this is a nice technique to use around boiler rocks and edges of kelp beds as well.  It coveres a lot of water and typically weeds out at least some of the smaller bites when using the larger swimbaits.

Take care...

Good point about the Marine reserve, you do have to be careful not to go too far down, luckily good fishing well before that area.

I did not stay over, it is only just under 2 hours from my house to there, so I normally just go up in the morning.  My wife walked the campground though and said they were decent.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Caspar Cove, Aug 5

Hello All,

This is Nawm, formerly known as Norm from Windsor.  I had trouble logging in some time ago and was never able to get logged back in using my old info and passwords, despite multiple attemts to get it done and requests for help.  Anyway, I was wondering what was happening in the NCKA world, so I decided to just create a new profile.

I have been fishing pretty consistently and have hit the rockfish several times since the opener, as well as done a few dives for the big snails.  My most recent outing was last weekend up at Caspar Cove.  Typical good ling fishing just south of the cove.  I found a great long finger that extends out several hundred yards with the top being 30 to 40 feet and breaking into 80 to 90 feet on both sides.  Didn't fish long, made three casts with a big 7 inch Fishtrap on that high spot for three keeper lings, the biggest being about 15 lbs.  Kept two and paddled in.

I've been in touch with Ron, and will post up when I am headed up there again, hopefully in the next few weeks.  Or we could always do another Fort Ross trip Ron, if you prefer.
