I agree with the points made by others regarding speed and Eric's comment about drive failure, etc, but for me, i'll gladly trade the speed for stability.  I prefer to stand up while I fish, including in the ocean.  The PA 14 allows me to stand in all but the most pukey conditions and sling the swimbait far.  Also easier to gaff fish while standing.  It's all personal preference, so if you can get out and try them all, that's all the better.  Happy to let you give my PA 14 a try if our paths align in the coming months...

Similar offer here. If you want to check out a 2019/2020 outback in Windsor I have 2. I think you’ve seen my camo one at ocean cove last year when I got my PB lingcod.

John

Sounds like we should try and get together this season on the coast!  I go whenever the weather looks great.  When the swell is bigger and/or wind is blowing, i go fish halibut (and the occasional striper or WSB) in Tomales or the bay (tide dependent) or hit the fresh water somewhere.  Plenty of great weather days on the coast through the year and so much more fun when it's beautiful conditions.  We are lucky to live in a place with many options!

Also, Billy over at Wind Toys in Santa Rosa is doing demos typically on Wednesday afternoons at local ponds if you want to go and try several different models.  You are probably already aware of that, but wanted to let you know, just in case.

See you on the water fellas!

Lots of “Sheep” just south of Point Arena

Yep, typical spring weather on the north coast.  Makes staying home a bit easier to accept...  Looking forward to a calm May...or maybe June (I hope!)   :smt003

Nice work, John!  Should be good this week, but the weather this weekend may slow things a bit.  I'm probably going to hit one of the wine country options on Friday....   :smt003

Nice report and good work finding the fish this time of year!  Those wild trout are so pretty and strong!

Is there an urchin removal event on the horizon, Tim? I
don’t dive but I’d sure like to lend a hand.

Check here for future urchin removal events.

Unfortunately, I understand the removal events are more symbolic than effective.  Certainly not opposed, but until the sea stars rebound enough to eat the little purple bastards, it's going to be a lot of tilting at windmills.

I echo what Annie said.  Tomales is a tough nut to crack, but persistence is rewarded.  I'll let Eddie reply on the ledges comment, but keep in mind, most of the target species tend to follow the edges of the structure.  It's a lot easier to sneak up on, or lay in wait for, a meal when you are close to structure, versus chasing in open water.  Yes, you will get halibut, stripers and other target species in open water with flat bottom, but watch the guys that consistently get them and where they like to focus their efforts.  Underwater topo maps are your friend.....

Keep at it!

Hate to be the wet blanket, but I rec'd a shellfish safety notification for Marin County today in email this AM...make your own choices, but if you saved some of those clams you might want to reconsider eating them....

Thank you for the warning.

However, I can only locate waring for mussels.
Last year they did shut down horseneck clams but I could not locate any warning for horseneck clams.

Paul

I just called the CDPH Shellfish Biotoxin Information Line (800)553-4133, and while only mussels are officially closed to harvest in Marin, there is a health advisory specifically for Marin County suggesting not to eat any clams or bivalves from Marin due to high levels of toxin found on recent surveys.  They did close both Marin and Sonoma Counties last year for a time, but we are not there just yet.  For now, it's an "eat at your own risk" deal.  I suggest you call the CDPH number each time you are thinking of heading out for clams, shellfish or crabs.  They update it immediately when a change occurs.

Great report though, and congrats to your wife on the nice hali!!

Tight lines,

Norm

Damn Nawm, thats a great fish and epic photos. OtW pics are so much cooler than pics of a cooler or tailgate!
They should establish a wsb hatchery in Tomales.

That’s a great idea, man!  I may try to reach out to the folks that run the grow out pens for WSB in so cal and see if there is any interest in putting one up in Tomales. They sure did great things in So Cal.

Dang...I forgot bout them pics, let me guess...swim bait?  I so want one... :smt006

I wish I could blame that one on my standard swimbait approach, but it was, in fact, a wee live anchovy on 20 lb leader and a 1/0 live bait hook!  I was throwing a swimbait on the other rod, of course, when the big beast ate the chovy on the rod in the rod holder.

I had not noticed this particular thread for white seabass before in the picture section and I was surprised to see no recent posts. I know of at least one NCKA member catching one last week in Tomales.

In any case, I'm adding one from August of last year, just to get everyone's juices flowing again on the hunt for the white ghost.  I have caught a lot of them over the years, having grown up and fished So Cal into my early 30's, but my personal best came from the amazing fishery that is Tomales Bay.  Right at about 60 pounds before bleeding.  Enjoy,

Norm

Nice work man!  Good to hear the wall is still putting out.

Happy 50th, man!!  I have one more year to go before I hit that milestone.  This, what we do, serves to keep us younger than we might otherwise be.

tight lines,
