Launched off the boat ramp about 6:30am. Tide still incoming but wind wasnt an issue.
Trolled frozen chovies near the pier and found a shortie at 21.5” about mid way down. Didn’t see much bait or much of anything all the way to the end of the pier. Didn’t see too many boats fishing halibut either.
Trolled frozen chovies back and saw a nice bait ball. Pulled out the sabiki and figured some bait fish action better then this no action. Started pulling out doubles and triples but all released because they were surf perch.
Suddenly stuck something mushy and heavy with some fight in it. I use an ultralight with 6lb test for sibiki/blue gills/crappie. Happen to catch a 21” hali on sabiki and yes it ate my sabiki.
Anyways, wind picked up but fortunately I’m heading towards shore with the wind. I worked my way back to shore at about 2pm. Ended up with 7 shakers and 1 keeper.
Two questions?
-is catching a halibut on sabiki common?
-should I have tried out in the open towards brooks island or out in deeper waters?
