Safety First / Paddle float self rescue video for large SOTs
« on: May 09, 2022, 11:04:04 AM »
Excellent video, including numerous ways to upright your beast of a fishing machine! Never thought that the touring boat methods of self rescue with a paddle float could be used for SOTs (or was necessary). Good to know. Perimeter deck lines are a good idea too, but be careful of entanglement. You can easily lose a finger in rough water if they’re too tight or loose and you’re not careful. You’ll have to find a place on your boat behind the seat where you can secure a paddle to use as an outrigger with the paddle float. That will probably take some modification and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Limits @ Mendo 11/24!
« on: November 25, 2007, 09:21:44 AM »
Lots of topwater action at Mendo Saturday under cloudy skies, and limits for Andrew and I in 2 hours and by 12:30pm. Calm water, and QUIET! Fished North of the point again, and the boils were directly across on the West shore, or near the point. 2 smaller fish on a popper in the boil, 4 larger ones on the extreme slow troll.  The kept fish ranged from 24-30 inches, 5-8 lbs.  The bite slowed  as the afternoon progressed. Only 3 other kayakers, one of which was Jonesz.  Nice to meet you Glen.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Mendo 11/19 Monday
« on: November 19, 2007, 08:24:23 PM »
Decided to finally take the opportunity to have an entire lake all to ourselves today, even though it's only at 30% capacity.  Got onto the water at 11:30 and ended up finding them at the point opposite of the South put in, at 1:30pm.  Lots of fish along the North side of the point.  3 hookups (1 landed, 1 unbuttoned, 1 stupid) within 30 minutes on minnows, but the bite was dead by 2pm.  We didn't see a boil all day.  Very easy launch, with only a slight amount of mud at the water line.

Thank you all for the awesome intel about the put in, rigging, where to get those huge feisty $1.25 minnows!!  My Australian buddy Andrew used to only fly fish.  Now he's addicted to LMB @ Clearlake and having huge expenditures on new gear.  Mendo is on the way! Next time we'll bring our fly rods.  This was our very first time fishing Mendo.  Now is the time.

Don't give up on sturgeon yet guys, the Napa River is loaded with them! We put in at Cuttings Wharf and headed South to the RR Trestle. Was in the water 20 minutes and then hooked this Beast of 65 inches, 64 lbs.  Towed me around for 20 minutes.  The fish have been in there for several weeks per Sweeney's Sport & Tackle in Napa (Pondsurf works there and unfortunately had to work yesterday).  Saw one other sturgeon jump, and another >66 incher which had to be thrown back by a shore angler.  64 lbs yielded 34 lbs of dino meat, ready for the honey and butter glaze and the BBQ!

Pondsurf, a newbie, and I decided to fish Sonoma Creek after a buddy said he heard boats were getting multiple hookups there on ghost shrimp.  Launched under the highway 37 bridge on the North side and paddled out past the mouth.  My fishfinder is down and Pondsurf forgot to charge his batteries so we were fishing blind, but it was easy to find the channel with our paddles.  Pondsurf had a fish on within 5 minutes but it was a shaker at 40 inches.  Nothing happened for another 3 hours except the newbie missing  a probable take.  He was only 30 feet away because of a slipping anchor, and right at the best part of the tide which was making less noise streaming past the hull of our kayaks (sign that the tide is slowing and toward the bottom), was sunny, very quiet, both of us enjoying a nice cigar, last 2 ghost shrimp on the line- I said to him how great it would be to hook up right then.  Within 10 minutes my rod was going off and I was on a 100 yard sleigh ride!  Barely legal 46 incher and 20 lbs.  I now know that a minimum fish is about 20 lbs and a maximum legal fish is about 40 (see 2nd px, 55 7/8" caught on a boat 2 weeks ago 1 mile off China camp).  40 lbs of sturgeon yielded 17 lbs of fillet which all went to the smoker.  Ended up with 10 lbs of smoked sturgeon.  Bud's meats in Penngrove does an excellent job.  His pepper and garlic marinade is fabulous!  Goes really well with a chardonnay, havarti cheese, and crackers!!  Fly tying guys are going to love it tomorrow night.

Fished the bottom of the outgoing closer to China Camp and further South then the Honey hole, and landed a 55 7/8 and  66 incher.  Both caught on Ghost Shrimp right after the tide slowed down on the outgoing (after the sound of rushing water off the stern stopped).  We were about 2 miles directly off of China Camp. It was a heart breaker to toss back the 66 incher.  The barely legal fish weighed in at 40 lbs.  Sad that a maximum legal 72" fish of aprox. 100lbs is now a maximum 56" fish at only 40 lbs.
