General Talk / Sea Lion eats Thresher Shark
« on: June 23, 2016, 06:03:14 PM »
Title says it all.  Thresher shark messed with the wrong sea lion.  Not sure where in Monterey this happened, but I sure would like to know so I can avoid these mean ass sea lions  :smt044

Nice morning on the water.  Had to paddle in at 10 to head to San Jose at 11.  Was bummed because the fish were biting.  There was a lot of bait getting chased around, and lots of sea lions out as well.  Wind was on and off, but mostly off.

Farenheit spotted a juvenile landlord close to the mi. buoy pretty early on.  I ended up seeing it a little later, about 9:30.  Was thinking about life when I saw a commotion on top of the water about 75yrds away.  Not sure if the GW hit the seal or if it was just a chase.  The seal took off in one direction and the shark ended up going the other.  Pretty impressive site seeing all that water fly around.

Had a tail ripped off just short of the stinger :smt010, so I guess the halibut are biting.  Hope everyone else got some good bites, ready to hear about them!  Took home 2 rock fish, so I am happy :smt003

General Talk / Re: Fresh Morels at Costco
« on: June 11, 2016, 05:36:14 PM »
They must be at most Costcos.  I got 3 packs when I found them here at the Santa Cruz Costco.  Went with morel, asparagus, and bacon pizza as my first dish with them.  Can't go wrong with the steak either!

Variable winds less than 5 kt becoming SW 5 to 8 kt in the afternoon. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny. Mixed swell...N 3 ft at 1 seconds and E 1 ft at 17 seconds. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Not the most favorable.  I'm still in if there's a group.

Game on!  :smt006

I might be into coming along on this excursion.  Where are you thinking of fishing if you paddle outta the harbor?  What time is the early morning drill?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: what battery for fishfinder ?
« on: November 14, 2015, 11:54:39 AM »
I recently purchased an Expert Power AGM 12v 22Ah (SLA) with the intention of powering a aerator pump for my livewell and lowrance Elite 5 (its on the xmas/wish list).  Also got a battery tender jr.  Been keeping it in a dry bag, running the wires to a switch in a Plano1612, then to the livewell.  Used it a few times for full days of fishing and it is still running on the first charge. This is the temporary setup, and has worked fairly well.  I plan to make a box, a place to hang it in the hull, and do a bit of wiring over the winter.

When it comes to deciding what size battery you need, find out what the draw is for the FF then do a bit of math.  It doesn't hurt to go a bit bigger, incase you decide to add other accessories like lights, stereo, and margaritaville margarita maker.   :smt044  Make sure you

Safety First / Re: A dire event

I'm going to test do a submersion test with my radio now.  Hope they don't ask me which boat I'm in, while I stand in my kitchen and do a check haha.  Very prudent of you to follow up with the CG, but a bit disconcerting to know that they never heard anything.  Again, radio malfunction?  So weird.  What kind of radio do you use?  I've got a cheapo Standard Horizons one and I wonder if the more expensive GPS/SOS ones are more reliable or sturdier?  Marines are some strong men, glad you kept your head on your shoulders and stayed focus even after you got off the water.  Tough decision, and sad that it had to be made, to forego medical treatment, again marines are some strong men.

I've carried flares for a long time, so long that I can't remember how to ignite it and the label is worn off  :smt044.  Maybe it's time to replace them and get the smoke signals.  I make smoke signals every now and again, but it's not red :cowboy_smoke:

So many lessons to take away from this experience.  I think it'd be a good idea to submerge the VHF radio then do a radio check while its nice and soaked.  Never would think twice about the radio failing, but shit happens on the big blue.  Do you think that the reason you couldn't get any response on VHF is due to a malfunction of the radio, not strong enough signal, outside of range?  A PLB is on the list of off-season purchases.  I tend to roll solo for many things, 4wheeling and hiking, so it's almost a mandatory item.

Glad you made it home Bulldog.  Heal up buddy!

Any luck? I'm thinking about trying SC tomorrow and was wondering whether I should bring my WSB, halibut, bonito, or BFT gear...

Not a bit of luck for us today.  Not a whole lot of action reported at the docks either.  CDFW mentioned that not many fish had came in as of 12:30.  Either there weren't any fish in our area or they weren't hungry.  Great day on the water though with minimal wind, until we wanted to come in.

My thought is this weather that will be here on Sunday night, has all the fish slowing down, not to mention the fact that we're a few days past the full moon.

TL:DR - There's no fish in Santa Cruz  :smt013 :smt005 :smt044

I'm down to launch from the harbor.  Frozen bait for me, no live well.  I'll will have to warn you this will be only my second time in the ocean on the yak.  Very much a rookie when it comes to rockfish fishing and will probably ask lots of questions.  What site do you get swell info from?

No worries on being a newb, I wasn't even salty with the pacific water till a couple months ago.  We've all gotta start somewhere.  Just wanna make sure that you've got all the safety gear needed, you know what they say about having and not needing.

Cen coast is right about the swell and NB.  The harbor is easy, and close to the same price for parking.

7:30 sounds good to me.  Looks like there may be some other kayakers coming to the area since the weather is a bit much along the coast.  Maybe they'll sound off....

Hey Brett, I'm game to join you.  Looks like a decent day, but the swell is twice as big as the last time I launched from new brighton.  I'll most likely launch from the harbor since I have a launch pass there.   Don't mind paddling out towards new brighton.  I'm in the process of ironing out the kinks in my livewell, so may not have live bait, squid should catch fish worth eating though.  Either way lets get on some fish.

Wanted To Buy / Re: WTB OK Prowler 13 Rudder
« on: October 19, 2015, 09:52:06 PM »
I'm not necessarily willing to fab up the mounts and what not, perhaps I could get the guys at the shop to throw it into the mix the next time the fire up the laser cutter...I'm sure it could be done, but do I want to put that much into it.  Preferably, I would just have to source a few screws and crimp a few cables, and buy the foot pegs.

Wanted To Buy / WTB OK Prowler 13 Rudder
« on: October 10, 2015, 08:12:28 PM »
Hi everybody!  Looking for a rudder for the Prowler.  Not interested in paying 250 for a new rudder so I was hoping to get one second hand.  If anyone has old parts, or even just a rudder (no cables), I'd be happy to take it off your hands and fabricate a few parts myself.
