So I'm new to the ocean and kayaking both and was wondering what conditions are a till acceptable to be out in. I realize this might be different for everyone. I am mainly looking for general guidelines

There really is no rule of thumb. Each area handles swells differently depending on the swell direction and the contour of the ocean floor (called bathymetry). In Bolinas, a 2 foot south swell with a period of 15+ seconds can make the launch really tricky. Meanwhile, the same beach might be nearly flat during a steep northerly swell height of 8 feet and a period of with 10-12 seconds.

Let us know where you're thinking of heading and we might be able to get a little more specific.
