General Talk / Raw fish consumption

Is it safe to eat sf bay caught halibut raw after proper freezing procedure? Is there a bacteria or other substances involving sf bay caught fish other than parasites?

Went out to Lake McClure last Saturday to fish the first Motherlode Series tournament of the year. 50 people signed up and 46 people showed up on the water. We were expecting a wet day with rain, shower and possibly snow but it stayed pretty dry except a few minutes of rain/hail in some areas. It was very tough day fishing for sure. The winner scored 48.5 inches with three fish limit and I came in at 21st with 42.5 inches. Nonetheless it was a fun day on the water. Saw many familiar faces including NKCA's finest Rob (racinrob) and mike (WingShooter). All three of us managed to limit

I'm sure a lot of you know about this  but I figured some may not. 6 spots left for Lake McClure and 7 spots left for Don Pedro and top 20 anglers go to TOC at Kelsey Bass Ranch.

Safety First / Big lesson learned
« on: February 05, 2018, 08:31:42 PM »
Went out crabbing to Half Moon Bay with Mike (rnrgeek) and Sean (fish67) and also met Don (camodon) at the shore. Weather was beautiful when we launched at 0830 until we dropped out pots in the water around 0930. Then the wind picked up just like that in seconds blowing 15-20 mph and gusting up to 30 mph. In the video you can see how the wind picked up in a flip of a switch. Battled the wind and the surf for 20 mins then decided life is more precious than some crabs. Valuable lesson on how weather can change in a instant. Be safe out on the water.

Went out to Doran Beach again last Saturday with my parents and my son. It's been slow at Doran Beach but it's a nice spot to hang out with the family and smell the salty air. We spent a couple of hours and caught 1 keeper dungie and 3 dink dungies and a few rock crabs.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Garmin FF question

Anyone use or used Garmin CV (clear vu) version? How do you like it?

Went out to Delta Montezuma Slough with fellow NCKA members for striper and sturgeon action. Weather was fantastic and the current was mild. No sturgeon was caught but few stripers were landed with swimbait and mudsuckers. Thanks again Kayakfish7 (Kyler, I hope I'm spelling it right) for setting this hookup.

For my son's first salt experience, we went out to Doran Beach for some crabbing last Saturday. There was strong SES wind when we launched at 11 am and it gradually subsided to mild wind by 3 pm. Didn't see too many kayakers on the water perhaps because it was windy and the water was choppy or because crabbing has been slow? Nonetheless, we had a good time.

I'm am fortunate to have a buddy who manages Kelsey Bass Ranch and I get to fish it multiple times a year without a hefty fee. My buddy Steve got some huge hits on swimbaits last week so we (Steve, Buck and I) went out there for monster bass action and hoping for a new pb. Of course it didn't pan out as we planned. Swimbait bite was none existent for me and Buck and very slow for Steve. Wacky rig senko saved the day again and got us some decent fish.

I attempted to catch my first kayak mudsalmon this year. Went out to American River (Howe) three times and Sac Port once but I got skunked all four times.  :smt089

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Crab Opener video report
« on: November 06, 2017, 09:33:09 PM »
I went out to Doran Beach for the crab opener. By the time I got on the water at 0700 there were already over hundred net/traps in the water. It was my first time crabbing from a yak so I only brought out one net because I didn't want to get myself overwhelmed. I ran into scottymeboy, jimmiejoebob and many other NCKA members. It was good to see familiar and new faces. Only got two 6 inch dungies but it was a good learning experience.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / In search of browns...
« on: October 31, 2017, 12:19:51 PM »
Matt (racer414) took me out to one of his secret spots up in the mountains for some brown trout action past weekend. After driving on a gravel and dirt path (semi off-road) for a while, we hand launched our kayaks by climbing down a long, steep dirt trail. It was already an adventure even before we got on the water. Fishing was slower than normal (per Matt) but I did manage to land my first brown trout on a kayak.

Matt (racer414) and I went out to the Delta for striper action and to test out Matt's homemade striper plugs on Oct 9th (morning after north bay fire started). We lanched out of Pirates Lair Marina and decided to paddle/pedal to Franks Track. The wind was a bit too strong for top water (plug) action so we threw S-waver and swimbait most of the morning.
