I got to OP around 7 am, in the water at 7:30. Wind was already blowing rather steadily about 10 mph. I headed out to make bait at the poop chute. I had a little trouble finding it. I went to the numbers Dave posted but could not see any boil but I did catch a wiff of it now and then. Dropped my sabiki and hooked up with a 10" jack smelt. Decided he was a bit to big and threw him back. I then started landing some chovies. The wind was still blowing and the tide flowing out so I was having a hard time staying on the bait. I made about 7 pieces of bait and figured that was good since it looked like I was going to get blown out early.

I scooped up a lively chovie and dropped down. After 5 minutes I feel a tap, tap then my line starts peeling out. Fish On! She takes a few runs and is shaking a lot but once on the surface she just kinda hung there. I let her swim around a bit and she made a few more small runs before I decided to try to net her. Yeah no gaff yet.  :smt100 I positoned the net so she would swim into it then I scooped it up quickly. She started going nuts but the way I had the net made her try to go deeper. I put her on the deck and went to grab my bat. Crap I forgot my bat! I pull out my knife and slice into her right behind her gill plate. She calms down a bit after that. I untangle my line from the net and hook her up to my stringer. I look around and the wind is picking up so I decide to call it a day. I left her in the net and put my legs over her. She only tried to bite me twice on the way in  :smt003

My first butt 18# 4oz! I was off the water at 9 after about 5 minutes of fishing!

Congrats Bill.  Way to go!!

BTW, I'd drop down a 10" jackie for butts anyday.  And yes, this is about the size I'll start using a stinger.

no gaff, no bat.  you're a true minimalist. next you'll be posting that you just jumped in and wrestled it into submission.

awesome report.

Bill, congratulations! What a nice fish!  I saw you paddle out and sitting side way on your green kayak catching bait this morning.  I am the guy fishing from a small white boat (2 people) not too far from you.  javascript:emoticon(':smt006')

The wind was even too much for us and I had to quite at about 1:30.  We caught nada!

I saw that you were going quite fast with your kayak and you seemed to paddle without much effort in the windy condition.  Were you paddling a prowler?

Yeah Al I was paddling the prowler, it moves really well. After landing the halibut I was a bit amped up so I was moving faster than normal! I kept thinking it was going to spring back to life and thrash the boat.

I got a gaff today at the Fisherman's Warehouse sale so I am ready for a bigger one!

Good move Bill :smt023 .  Most of the successful big game fisherman I know opt for the gaff when landing big halibut.

Great looking fish!  I was going to head out this morning but the wind seemed to be blowin at 5:30. I headed back to bed. I have fished the area a lot over the years but never from a Kayak until this year.  Where is the poop shoot or the shit pipes as you guys have so elequently put it.  I don't want to get out there and not find bait.

Here are the numbers:

37° 39.917N
122° 21.746W

I am not entirely sure I was on it yesterday. The combination of wind and current made the boil difficult to spot. I seemed to do pretty well slow trolling #12 sabiki with a 3oz hookless kastmaster on the end.
