Hi all,
For freshwater, does the color of your fishing line make a difference?
AND...
Does the material of the line make a difference?

This is primarily geared towards trout.

In the past I really haven't paid much attention to the color of my line, usually using a flourocarbon 4-8 lb test and having success, but wanted to know if there is any sort of strategy to this.

I'm not sure if the color really matters that much.  I just tested the new Berkley NanoFil line at Shadow Cliffs on Saturday and It got bit OK.  I was top line grub trolling with 2 rods and caught 2 trout on 4 lb. test NanoFil which is white, and I caught 3 trout on 2 lb. test moss green gamma line.  I use one spinning reel with the NanoFil and one baitcaster with the mono.  I would recommend the Berkley NanoFil to anyone using spinning reels because I had no issues with line twist which is a common problem when trolling with mono line.

I just moved back from Socal (redondo beach) and have been mostly salt water fishing, so now I'm trying to get back in to the fresh water scene. I usually only fish shadow cliffs and Del Valle with Powerbait and don't do much trolling. Thanks for the input. I'll check out the NanoFil.
I've been using a spinning reel with mono, and have braided power pro on the baitcaster (been using it as a saltwater set-up).
My dad and I are going to try Del Valle tomorrow. I'll be in my yak and he'll have his float tube.
Any tips/pointers? Its been a while.

Does color matter id say sometimes. Id stick to clear or Green. I prefer a floro leader as it for the most part disapears right away. Put your line in the water if you can see it the fish can for sure. Lighter line is also gonna be less visable. 10lb test is about all your gonna need for freshwater no matter what your fishing for.

There will be guys that disagree with this but its a matter of opinion. Some guys will use 20lb test for BASS way over geared IMO but just like so cal saltwater fishing there are guys that run nothin but 20-30lb test 15 is more then enough.

My trout line for trolling, casting lures or soaking bait is the same. I use 8lb PowerPro (1lb mono equivalent diameter) in hi-vis yellow so that I can keep track of my lure easier, especially trolling. But, I use 10 yds of 4lb flouro as a leader attached to the braid using a J Knot. I've yet to find a system I like better.  The other benefit of this type of setup is that the braid will last you several years so all you ever have to change is the leader. :smt003

I also do a lot of fishing at Shadow Cliffs and use 8# mono and cajun with no problem.

P-Line Floroclear 8lb.  I have a reputation for using heavy lines, but I have not had a fish break off in over a year (including a sturgeon bycatch while striper fishing).
