Hi all,

I'm heading up to Russian Gulch SP in about a month and will be fishing from my "kayak" for the first time.  Wondering if there are fish to be had inside the cove?

I don't plan on going outside the cove because this is my first ocean trip with this boat which is not a kayak really but a homebuilt wooden "double paddle canoe" and I'm not totally sure how it will handle swells, chop or being fished from. So playing it safe for now.  I've been to Russian Gulch once before to dive for abs and it looked like a good place to rock fish or hunt for and dabs but not sure.  Any advice is much appreciated!

David

Thanks, I will.  I'm not new to the ocean and will be out fishing at the same time my buddies will be diving abs in the cove.  The boat is a very sea worthy design, I've just never use it in open waters before.

Thanks Sledge, thats good news.  Any tips on gear or locations in the cove?  I was planning on using some shrimp flies and ling bars for the rock fish.  And I might try setting squid strips on the bottom for flat fish.

Last year, I fished RG inside the cove, but at the edges (where it is kinda between inside/outside the cove).  Basically paddled out and towards the left right before you leave the cove entirely.  Caught  3 RF for campsite dinner.  The wind/swell made me paddle regularly to avoid being swept into the rocks, but it wasn't too bad.  As long as there's some interesting structure, you should find RF.

Thanks guys. Yes homebuilt from plans, not kit.  It's an east coast design, basically a very small dory, which is traditionally a very sea worthy hull shape.  This boat was built from red cedar which is very light and strong but can be brittle.  I'm still not totally confidant about that aspect of the build.  I think if I end up liking her for kayak fishing I may go back and build another but use glued ply construction instead (keeping this one for calmer waters). We'll see.

hamachijohn, that sounds great. Exactly what I was hoping to do, fish that line of the cove just as it opens up to south.  I figure along the walls on either side there will be good as well.  If I can add even one RF for the ab heavy camp fire dinner I'll be happy!

Was it closed?  It should be open through the summer according to state parks.

Closed already? That's bad news. We usually launch there and an dive the south side.

We are in wooden kayaks as well. CLC Mill Creek 16.5's its a decked canoe design.

I hope it isn't closed already, our big trip is next month.

As the others said, be safe, pack some floatation & have a great time.

I just checked with state parks, Russian Gulch will be open through the summer.  I guess it has been closed for water system maintenance and will reopen tomorrow she said.  Whew!
