Any ideas for good areas to practice launching & landing near SF? I'm thinking somewhere in Marin Co, but south of SF works too. A little farther is fine if you know a good spot.
Ideally, I'd like a place where I could do some practice and also do a little fishing from shore. Even better would be a decent spot where some friends could also hang out for the day.

HMB is probably the best area locally... Marin is kinda sparse with decent practice launches

Muir, Bolinas, and stinson are all possibilities, but they are so dependent on small surf from the correct (NW) direction that its hard to plan.

I 2nd what Mooch said. Southern end of Linda Mar is typically more protected from swell so its a good place to practice. On a smaller days you shouldn't find too many surfers in the water. Head on collisions always possible.

Ah yes, that's probably a good choice. Just remembered some good perch spots down there, too.

The lagoon on the outside of pillar point is a great spot. People fish off the jetty there too.

Mooch mentioned both spots I would recommend.

anybody carry a screwdriver on their yak?

Not specifically, but a multitool  (I read Les Stroud's book :smt003). I've actually used it several times to repair both the kayak and my rolleze cart on the beach. I normally keep it in my plano box.

I gotta know though, why the screwdriver BK?

Shicken, let me know if you ever wanna hit the local beaches.
Some areas here are fine at times (my other question is for days with multiple agendas, i.e. with non-kayaking/surfing tag-alongs, etc).

Blue, makes sense about real world practice. "Classroom" conditions often don't compare to the real thing.

Thanks for the responses, btw.

IDK, the most basic multitool?  :smt102  MacGyver could build a rocket with it...  :smt003

I guess I need to clarify my suggestion. Don't you hang in Marin Bluekayak? (??). Anyway, you're right in that it's not a good place to practice when the tide is out. It needs to be around +2 feet or it is too rocky(but it's good tidepooling). And you're also right about how much you want and the swell size and wind.
People put in by the green pier and yak over to the lagoon every weekend. It's pretty common for the surf to be pretty good at Linda Mar and surfers beach. On those days it's too big for yak rookies to practice because the waves are too big and ruining the whole vibe with the surfers. Quite often, on a day like that, the PP lagoon is like a lake with foot high ankle slappers. You can paddle over to the reef and ride a foot tall wave for a hundred feet if you so desire. I think that would be good practice.
Like I said, you can fish there off of the jetty, off the reef, or north of the reef. For that matter, you could paddle north of the reef and practice on the beach up there. But it would have to be real small, and those are the conditions surfers beach and Linda would not be to big or crowded.
The other reason I said it is a good spot is because you wanted a good spot for your buddies to hang. The beach at the lagoon is a good spot but it's a little exposed to the wind. Linda Mar sucks in the wind but surfers beach can be calmer. Near the lagoon, in the harbor, is a nice beach behind the bluff where people hang because of that. But when the weather is good I couldn'd think of a place I'd rather be. I've put in there a couple hundred times and I don't care for crowds.
