Very simple demo of how not to deal with waves after a long day fishing... even when they're small.

Don't sleep...

ps. And for all the Hobie owners, notice he left his Mirage drive in..  another no no.

I'm a total newb when it comes to surf launches/landings so lets go over the specifics as I see them. Again, I've only done it twice in very mellow conditions so go easy on me.

Mistake #1: Looks like he paddled a bit early. As I understand it, you want to coast in right behind the breaking wave. Not with it. Is this correct?

Mistake #2: He was not coming straight in. Don't you also want to come in perpendicular to the beach? Seems that if he was coming straight in he might not have flipped even though he paddled too early.

Am I right here? I just want to make sure I understand why things went wrong with this particular botched landing.

that was beutiful. once you do get out of square and in front of a wave like that, it helps to lean into the wave as it breaks over you. prevents flippage.

Long flat boats want to broach, and that one went there.  We have all wiped out, learning to not do so (at least most of the time) takes practice.

Look at these sweet shots taken by an un-named photographer at Chef's funeral...

Pacifico actually ended this as graceful as possible...

The day before the sure-footed and confident paddler Jellyfish ate it at Limekiln.  Soaked, sandy and with a broken rod...

Looks like anytime I go out with some of you I'm going to have to check everyones camera for pictures that should not be seen by the general public.  :smt003

I don't know if you can actually say I ended that "gracefully"...if it weren't for someone having grabbed my yak and pulling me up the beach a bit it would have been a somewhat painful experience.

Good memory of my first time ever actually yak fishing in the salt though.  It's amazing how far I've come since then...but like everyone else my number will be called again sometime.  :smt010

So far those look like my usual surf landings, including the one piece to two piece rod conversion.   :smt009

Hope to get better though,

I do stow everything possible now even in really good conditions.

Yes on both FF.....we got to practice "surf landing" durring a "Kayak Surf Safety Class" last summer that Mooch set up at HMB.
didn't have gear and X-tra wieght (which made it easier $$) I never did it untill that day...it helped alot with CONFIDENCE in knowing that....IT's JUST WATER!  and you'll dry eventually.

here is what it might look like when you get to the beach...
pic1~ taking off in calm conditions

pic2~what it turned into after that

pic3~ coming back into the beach area "he THOUGHT looked calmer than the regular spot"

I bailed out of launching on this particular day and spent it picking up trash along the beach...then we constucted "ManDogs"
