On the Dungeness crab front, new rules are coming. You can get a sneak preview here. The proposed adoption date is December 9, 2020, so I think that means they will go into effect at the beginning of next year. A short summary is that you will need an additional Recreational Crab Trap Validation on your license ($2.25) and an additional "marker buoy" (3" x 5" red buoy) trailing the main buoy by no more than three feet to indicate that it's a trap (a picture of Admiral Ackbar is optional). You can't run more than ten of your traps but you can run an additional ten of somebody else's gear with their written permission. You have to run your gear "at intervals not to exceed nine days".  And if there's too many whales or turtles around the season could be delayed or closed entirely. I may switch to ring nets.

I had a friend who would mark his buoys with 'SFPD' after getting poached way too often. He never had a problem after that. Not sure the legality of it however.

Every year they dream up of new regulations to deter the anglers.

Every year they dream up of new regulations to deter the anglers.

And yet... every year there are more anglers.
Elsewhere on this forum, people complaining about spot burn, crowded launch sites, and too many pots in the water.

In defense of CDFW:

Sport anglers are only one constituency. There are many others, and they are often at cross purposes. Would I run things differently?  Hell yes. Are new regs designed to reduce marine mammal entanglements a hill to die on?  Hell no.

Dead whales and seals wrapped in fishing gear provide a powerful image and is exactly the kind of thing that could lead to a ballot initiative that takes the management decision away from CDFW all together. Just like the prohibition on hunting bear with dogs or the protection of mountain lions.

As far as I can tell, it's just proposed regulations so far, so I don't think anything has gone into effect (and may never go into effect).  Did a search and didn't come up with anything beyond the proposed rulemaking docs that have already been circulated, so I doubt anything has happened at this point?

Here is a link to the proposed changes:
https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=183154&inline

The 2021-2022 OSFR has this statement on page 3 under "What's new for 2021"

Crab Regulation Changes (anticipated to take effect during the 2021-2022 season)
On December 9, 2020, the Fish and Game Commission adopted new regulations related to the take of recreational crab in California waters. They include new gear marking requirements, gear servicing, trap limits, license validation, and season modifications to minimize entanglement risk. Amendments to sections 29.80, 29.85, and 701 are anticipated to take effect on November 1, 2021. Please check the Fish and Game Commission website (https://fgc.ca.gov/Regulations/2020- New-and-Proposed#29_80) for more information and to view final regulatory text.
