You are the bane of the Shadow Cliffs trout, Mel. Those big ones are the size of keeper salmon. Do they stock them that size or have those been in the lake a few years?

I believe each time they stock, there are some "jumbos" thrown into the mix.

Jon, You are right no camping there but a very good chance of catching a trophy trout.

Thanks for all of the info.
Nice job on those trout!

I have been doing some research, and was thinking the lower trinity river looks good.  I know itís more than a 4 hour drive, but the camping is right on the water and from what Iíve read, good sized trout can be caught all year.  Thoughts?

Itís more of a timing issue, frequent rains and rivers blow out. Iíd look to Shasta/Whiskeytown/Trinity lakes then make your way over to the trinity of there are good reports of steelhead. Youíd be closer to the upper river, which clears before the lower river does. Also, on the lower river the locals can be a little cranky.

If itís steelheading yuo want and you are willing to travel farther set up shop in Brookings and youíll have your choice of rivers and can chase reports drifting the elk, sixes, rogue, chetco, and smith.
