Finally got our whole house generator put in!  No more running extension cords!
My current generator (Honeywell 7500W W/Electric start) is available now for anyone that's looking for a nice sized generator! Need to talk with CFO about price, but its available now. (No pictures of it yet, but will get some)

The installer foreman decided that the 7.5Kw system the sales guy sold us was too small, he upsized the generator to the 9KW no increase in fee!  With a 70' run of electrical, 20' run for propane gas line, labor etc...we came in under $6k for the install.  Should have done this 10 years ago!  I'm no electrician, and wouldn't want to try and tackle this project on my own because of that.
My plan before this was to install a utility disconnect (Knife switch) and run conduit for an outlet that I could plug a 220VAC heavy cord into ran from my generator.  But never got the disconnect, conduit, or the socket, I did build up the 8ga extension cord though.
  Won't be needing that now!
  Were happy its done!
Now watch, we won't loose power for a long time! :smt012

Probably but when I post how we keep losing power you will just smile and say right on.

9KW is a good move. 7KW tends to bog down a bit when first starting with a heavier load like AC  etc. Everything should work fine --- as long as he didn't sell you a Generac brand.

Nice setup. We've got a 7kw B&S and it's served us well for more than 8 years. It was a good move to upgrade to the 9kw, as 7 is just a bit shy of what is really needed for a whole house.

Just curious as to what gauge of wire they used for the 70' run. I've got about 50' now and would like to move the generator to a spot that would require about 75'...

I believe he said it was 4 Ga.?  but I can check. He had 2 sizes, and one of them was too large to fit in the house side terminals. (As he was attempting to install a jumper from house connect to the new generator utility disconnect.  I'm happy the foreman upsized the system.  When the power does go out, all we really need powered is our fridge, water heater, and TV (Cable box, internet/phone)
We won't be doing laundry, won't be running the house furnace.  7500W would have sufficed, it's what I've been using since 2011.

You did get a Generac. I don't know if they improved it since we bought ours. The Generator was not set up  to charge it's own battery. The display panel would drain the battery in 2-3 days. A solar panel to the battery didn't cut it. We had to get a car battery charger and loop it back to the generator battery. We've spent a lot of $$$ keeping our Generac going. Two weeks ago it was the Solenoids going bad.

Yes, its Generac.  The generator has a built in battery charger.  I can access battery status on the control panel, and  the charger supplied 14.3vdc when system was turned on.

Generator works great!  We had a bump in power earlier  that caused it start but power was restored and it shut off.  Well about 1/2 hour later power dropped again, this time it was out for about 2 hrs. Generator started, stablized, then we can hear the utility disconnect contactor  trip (The box is just outside our tv) switching the house to the generator! Power just returned as we heard the contactor  switch back, 1 min later the generator   stopped!
Happy, as wife had to do nothing! :smt003

After that investment I am sure it was just set to auto test mode.  No way you actually had a power outage.  That only happens to me when the generators are put away.

Wife said " uh... we just lost power"  I didn't believe it, but the generator started (Yes, in auto mode, not auto test mode)  WTH? Well later that night we learned a branch fell on wires near the Valero gas on Graham hill.  That morning I had just tested the "Auto" part by flipping the main to off.  Who knew we'd be needing the thing for real later that day?
Glad I didn't have to run those damn ext. cords anymore!
