After talking with my buddy we plan to make another Catalina crossing again this year. It was so much fun in 2016, it will be even better for this year since we had gained experience from last year.
I have had people asking to inform them before another trip, so here your chance guys.  :smt001

It's an open invite to any AI/TI owners, that think they are capable of peddling for miles just in case lack of wind, can do self rescue and comfortable in the open ocean. More importantly,if you say you go, you need to commit, sorry no flakers here.
Open for 2 people only to keep the planning minimal and I think it's safer on a smaller group.
We will apply for a multi-day catch with CDFW. So we can keep 3 days catch. 21 spiny lobsters plus all socal fish you want to bring back.

Time frame: Oct-Dec 2017
Departure: Long Beach
Campground: Two harbors for 4 nights

I'll go into more details when we have ID our next 2 individuals.

Holy crap.  That's quite a trip.

Too bad there are no accommodations at the Farallones.

Sounds like a lot of fun!  How did it go last year?  Didn't you get your AI less than a year ago?

I have a number of years of experience near shore sailing keelboats and dinghies and I learned to sail along that stretch of coastline.  I'd be hesitant to make the crossing in a full size keelboat myself.  I also have the "experience" of overestimating my equipment and abilities and getting stranded miles out to sea in that channel.

Because you're on a ballast-free craft, you should practice righting the boat all by yourself, which may be tricky without a daggerboard.  Your outriggers are designed to prevent that from happening, but if your leeward outrigger busts on you, you're going over.  I'm not too familiar with the AI construction, but I imagine in that situation you'd have to abandon the outboards and sail, which likely requires some practice to be able to do it on the water.

Just a few thoughts to consider. Have fun and stay safe!

Hey Jemery, look at dtizz's post. It was our trip last year.

A few people have asked about a specific time frame. I cannot set a date now here is why.
I think it's safer to determine a week before heading. Remember we need a good weather window for 5 days to make it a round trip. Safety is priority here.
What I am going to do is build up an interest list of AI/TI owners. Determine departure date based on forecast then I'll reach out to see whoever can make it.

There is nothing like planning a set date, book campground, time off from work only to find out forecast says 10ft swell 30mph wind.

My approached work last year, I hope it works again this year.
