What's up guys?

I'm looking for a better way to cushion my bony ass during long days on the water in my Outback. The thin, flimsy seat cushion was inadequate right out of the gate, and now it seems the foam has broken down a bit and shifted forward. Now there is ZERO padding in front of the two pegs where my tailbone rests.

Has anyone tried the aftermarket inflatable cushion add-on from Hobie? It doesn't look like it would add any cushioning to the tailbone area...

Any other options? I guess I could just replace the seat bottom piece, but then I'd end up with a seat that was just as crappy as the day I bought the boat...

Thoughts?

~Alex

i have no hobie,,,butt(pun intended)i have tried many of self inflating cushions....they'd last a year or two then start to leak air.

** Hobie has one that has lasted me the longest.

There are a few companies who make kayak seat pads.  Maybe one of those underneath your seat or switch to a better seat all together?

Dick's sporting goods has some stadium seat compressed foam pads that are pretty low profile and feel pretty damn comfy.

Thinking about picking one up for the 10 hour Islander days.

I stole my wife's gardening cushion and place it on top of the existing seat.  Kinda ghetto but much more comfy...and CHEAP!

For the AI I have been using this:  http://www.amazon.com/Kerco-Foldable-Kayak-Seat-Cushion/dp/B009SKTT9Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1433797286&sr=8-3&keywords=kayak+cushion&pebp=1433797291025&perid=1V01ZTT3YM79D7EABWT0

which I got to replace this: http://www.amazon.com/Yakpads-PS-BLK-Gel-Filled-Paddle-Saddle/dp/B000PZRUC6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433797286&sr=8-1&keywords=kayak+cushion

The gel filled one felt good, but over time the gel shifted and it was not comfortable anymore.  The other one is cheap, durable, and has lasted me over two years.

Thanks guys! That was quick!

Al - does that pad do a good job of covering the webbing strip and the two plastic pegs (the area with ZERO padding as is)? That area, and a ~1" strip in front of it, is really what's causing the problem...

And how do you attach that thing so it doesn't shift around while you pedal? I do a lot of trolling these days, so whatever I get needs to stay put while I pedal for hours on end.

It fits pretty well, sliding all the way into the crevice between seat and back rest.  But I didn't attach it at all, and do have to shift it back into place on occasion.  The YakPads gel pad had two eyes on it that you could use to secure it with some cordage.  I would have to say that if you want the most comfort, the Gel Pad was more comfortable... but since it didn't last very long for me, i'm not buying another one.

I use the inflatable Hobie cushion and it's worked great for me for 2+ years. Like everything Hobie, it's expensive, but in this case, it's worth it IHMO. I tried some of the cheapo solutions, and none of them worked well or lasted.

Interesting... I know each ass is shaped a little different, but does it lift you up enough so you don't contact the un-padded strip where the plastic pegs are?

Might have to give that thing a try...

I would also add that I'm still thinking of replacing the entire Hobie seat on my Outback with a standard seat, like the one I use on my X-Factor: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IMGA1M?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01

Since it's currently unavailible, saw that there is another like it even cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/Sit--Cushioned-Kayak-Padded-Backrest/dp/B00LBBBY7U/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433801910&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=cod+kayak+seat

Would just need to install anchor points in the rear to use one.  Hummm... May just order that seat now hahaha

I've also been pondering scrapping the Hobie seat and installing something else entirely ... I really like the Surf to Summit seat I've got for my Scrambler, but it was definitely pricey. I think those two you posted are actually knockoffs of the Surf to Summit GTS I'm referring to.

I'm just worried that the seat might slide around a lot since it wouldn't be attached with pegs at the bottom...

Yes. And the inflation level is easily adjustable on the water.

Maybe I should post a picture of my derriere, so you can see if it's a similar shape...
