Thanks again for all the positive feedback guys!

I have consolidated some of the additional info into the first post to have it all in one place, and added a sticky so newer divers can find it easier.

Here is the much abbreviated version for my JK blog:

http://jacksonkayak.com/blog/2015/02/16/northern-california-spearfishing-hole-hunting/

And, I have attached some pics showing what the RAM X-Grip looks like in detail and mounted on my yak...you can the speargun band rubber modificiation I did after the factory pieces fell off and got lost. The phone in the picture is my wife's and not mine.  :smt002

when it comes to hole hunting i really prefer small mid handles , it gives you much more control of the gun when using the other hand to hold on in surge or when holding a light . its more like using a pistol compared to a riffle . if you look around you can fine small riffes (wood or metal) or jbl mids really cheap .

I use that same RAM phone holder in my truck.  Works great.  Yes, those rubber pieces can fall off if you aren't careful.

thanks Jim--i got to read this and watch the clip again at work today--love the rain lol

while no where near exp as DG -this is word for word where i'm at right now also--got the red triangle light and used it this weekend--wow--daylight  in the holes now---and also love reading online and taking these lessons with me---little life saving level tips too

Good write up.  I started with a generic light and now have the same light as Jim.  It works pretty good but depends on how shallow you are and if there is a lot of sun reflection.  The deeper holes seem to be easier to see with that light.  I am thinking of getting another brighter light that will be more of a spot light for those deeper holes.  It may be just me but I need more light.

I only recently started really looking into holes and cracks as my diving improved and I could spend more time down there.  In areas with a lot of surge it took me awhile to really understand when and how to safely look into holes without being pushed into them.

Most of my learning has been from guys posting their videos and figuring out underwater features where the fish are.

Keep up the good work Jim it helps many expand on their knowledge and become better divers.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People arenít supposed to look back. Iím certainly not going to do it anymore.Ē

hey so I just got into spearfishing and have already lost 2 clips 3 masks a fin a polespear, snorkle and tons of fish. I was wondering if you could hole hunt with a polespear becuase I dont want to have to let go and risk losing my spear again, because like I said I am new and I cant hold my breath very long. Are there any tips in order to make sure I dont lose my spear again?
