Great article, and some truly amazing fish.  Alligator gar look like one of those fish that'll straight f*** you up if you dare cross them.

Used to have to use steel leaders when I fished the Comal and Lampasas Rivers when I was stationed at Hood in the 80's. Couldn't keep the things off bass plugs, and locals treated them like "trash" fish.

Saw lots of light spinning rigs get trashed by these critters. Most of the time, just packed up and either went home, or moved to a different river to get away from them.
“We start having problems when we listen to “experts” who have never truly faced violence and have never had to make the comply/resist decision when their lives are  at stake.  It’s easy to talk about resisting an attacker armed with a gun from the safety of the computer keyboard in the writer’s cozy home.  It’s a bit different when there is a gun wielded by a crazy man stuck in your face late at night.”

I have never caught them from a kayak or quite that big, but they are tough critters.  We would nail them to a tree and use tin snips to get through the skin to filet it. They make great fried fish nuggets
