Wanted something more challenging than rockfish so floated Hwy 20 bridge to Sycamore solo yesterday. Some salmon on redds, not whole bunch. Epic bite from about 3:30 until dark, big fish.. I pounded them with eggs and other nymphs but all they wanted were eggs. If you can get out in the next week do it. The peak of the bite doesn't last long, I haven't timed it right the last 3 years. With the water so low and clear the fish will probably get wary soon, bring your nymphing A-game, if you only fish dries, pick another time. If you haven't caught a big Yuba bow, you're missing out on the hardest fighting bow in the valley...

Well Stu, kayak fishing is a lifestyle, not a hobby, sometimes you have to look at the swell report and say "Hey bud let's party"

Very cool Golfish.
Were you fishing from shore or from the kayak?
I'd like to get out there sometime but I'm still working on my B-game. :smt003

Outcast commander FTW. I've mentioned the benefits over a kayak for this type of river fishing before. Horses for courses I always say.

Hwy20 bridge to sycamore is easily done in a kayak, I've done it with flyaker in his prowler 15 a few times and I know a few others have done it. The advantage of  commander/watermaster type rafts is it allows you to just stand up and start fishing without getting out. Doing that in 2-3 ft. of water above a drop off is invaluable for flyfishing and that stretch on the yuba has 3-4 places like that. Yeah, I could anchor a kayak above but with the commander I can easily wade above the whole length of the drop off. For gear fishing probably less of an advantage.

Other advantages are not having to walk back up to the kayak after fishing a long run (perfect when swinging with the spey rod), feel safer wading deep in basically a giant inner tube, no need to get out to drag over shallow areas, and it's more comfortable to take a midday nap on than a kayak, LOL.

Kayak on the Yuba is a piece of cake.  Perfect water for it.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I would love to float the Yuba in a kayak or lower Sac (or American) for a day of fly fishing. Never done any of them and would love company. Anybody interested?  Weekdays work as well as weekends.
