WTB Hobie Outback

Hey everyone,

I've been fishing for a while, and I've decided to purchase a kayak. I was referred to this site by one of your members, who recommended that I get a Hobie Outback (mainly due to the mirage drive).  I'm on a budget of about $1300, so let me know if you have something! If it has accessories, great.

I say go for the hobie. It sucks to try and paddle and fish at the same time.  Plus if a swell and wind come up you its seems like it would be easier to get back in. 

Good advice, it seems like the mirage drive offers tons of advantages over a traditional paddle kayak.

It would be pretty sweet to get a kayak w/o having to paddle but for my first kayak I just went with a Ascend 12'. That way later on down the road when I want an upgrade, I can appreciate all that a quality Kayak has to offer. I'm more of a river fisherman anyways and don't mind dropping an anchor to set in a spot and fish, and also the shoulder workout the paddling gives me is a good feeling. Show us some pics when you get your Kayak and show it off

Welcome to the madness.
Go to Headwaters Kayaks and talk to them. Then demo a handful (at least) of standard and hobie yaks to see what fits you & your comfort/skill  level best. Buying a kayak without paddling/peddling it first is like throwing dice.

and always remember, kayakfishing is 95% kayaking and only about 5% fishing. So learn your paddling well and it will serve you well as you progress.

The PA is an expensive ride, and I don't think you are gonna find one for anywhere near $1500... go for an Outback... Still a big-wide-stable platform and you should be able to pick one up used in your range... hell, they are only $1700 new.

I bought my Hobie outback right outta the shoot on a friends recommendation.  Its the only kayak I have ever been in, and honestly, I just don't understand how the other half lives.  I can not imaging having to paddle all damn day long, and I really don't see how trolling is at all enjoyable. 

Pick up that '10 pa in the classifieds for 1800 it's a bit more than your budget but with all the extras you'd save a ton of money trying to rig one

Next to the ai the pa is the second most expensive.1500 will be hard to find.go a few hundred more or try maybe the outback

Yeah, I'm going to go check it out on Sunday, just felt like testing the waters and seeing if there's anything else that interests me. It does seem like an awesome deal.

Bought my revo last yr in portland...paddled a 10' pelican for 5-6 yrs than did not demo a Hobie, just read everyone's positive feed back on them........put in at RBII last yr was like jumping on a SHIP!!!  Only thing I would advise is make sure where you purchase your yak they stock parts........my Hobie dealer does not very unhappy with quite a few things with my revo.......quite a few warranty issues.......where I had to fix it myself....maybe they can certify me and I can be "the" moblie service repair guy   other than "not" having parts as I wear them out I'm very happy with hands free!!! it rocks when the winds blowing or there's a big drift...you can hover over one area, where you have to paddle back with a paddle.......will change the way you fish!!!  Oh did I mention trolling for Salmon

It's a smokin deal I have been watching Craig's list in 4 areas around me since feb. and the cheapest pa I've seen was 1900 and sold in a few hours

Thanks for the info, yester! However it seems that even their used yak's are a bit out of my price range, so I would probably be better off just buying from a private seller.
