everyone is somewhat of a shark expert...........

I think that I'll stick with the "I know what I don't know" and maintain that sharks might hit a kayak for a handful of reasons.

1. they are hunting and confused
2. they are curious and confused
3. they are territorial and pissed and bored
5. they are startled, and then pissed
6. etc,etc.

Seems like you might avoid an incident in one set of circumstances, and then get nailed in another set, in the same kayak regardless of paint patterns or hull color..

and then there's the whole safety visibility thing. If the guy with the ocean camo/shark camo boat got flipped at sea, his boat would become invisible. Heck, it is tough to see blue or gray kayaks at all OTW, even when they are upright. I suppose it is a toss up, but I think my chances of getting run over by a PB are probably about the same as getting hit by a shark. I certainly would never think "I'll never capsize or need to be spotted by a rescuer".

I guess it comes down to what you as a paddler personally feel comfortable with, and that is all good. I think the socal guy's kayak looks cool and he does present a decent argument, but I just can't buy into the pigeonholing. The "yum-yum" argument has been around since before WWII. It's been debunked and rebunked a bunch of times so who knows if it is accurate.

For now, I'm stuck in a red (but quite decorated) boat :smt002.

Ditto what Piscean said.  Every time someone comes up with a theory, it seems the man in gray suit debunks it.

As intelligent and playful as they are according to the "ists" that study them and hypothesize, maybe it is just play to them or they are reading the reports and want to make the humans look silly . . .

Mel~ Who would have quessed it was gonna be your turn coming up next. Makes one think if we are all just pieces of natures chess game.
I seriously thought those black stripes would deter the full on attack i experienced that day....i really wanted to trick it into a more curious nibble, like me seeing it first, while it's checking this funny looking thing out......well, unfortunately now you know for yourself what it's like..... and it AINT FUN!  :smt009

Be as safe as possible, always.

"habitual theory debunkers" is what we should call them

my theory is that since i paddle a big ol malibu x factor they should leave me alone because I'm out of there food size range. but chances are thats wishful thinking :smt010 :smt010

I'd say the worst case scenario is red because it is dark enough to trigger a hunting response from sharks that are deep, but also warm enough to trigger an investigative response from sharks swimming near the surface. That's why I would not own a red kayak for fishing in the ocean.

Just my take, but that is my take.

   Are ya reading this G-Whiz  !        :smt044

Fact is there's just a lot more of them breeding these days, and a whole lot more kayaks on the water then ever before too.

Now,,,  If you really want to be safe,,, It's a fact, no shark has ever attacked a Raptor to date!!!    :smt002

I think they do it because they can.  Maybe it's like a dog chewing on a tennis ball.

IMO the most important thing to learn from all this is make sure you can get back on your kayak quickly, without a lot of crap to get tangled up in.

Ironic he started this thread little more than a week before his own encounter - just another strange coincidence.
