We live in alameda and pops used to be a big fish head, so I want to go out with him somewhere local.  Maybe within 70miles from alameda.  I'm looking for a place that we can fish on shore and relax and catch something.  Any pointers guys?  Where to fish, what to fish for and what to use?  Any advice is good advice.  I'm trying to stay away from taking him to the rockwall tomorrow since I've been skunked there too many times on shore (and in kayak).  Suggestions?

Sorry not more people could help you out with this thread. When I was young my dad would take me to Coyote pt or Berkley pier not that we ever did very well but we had good times together. Hope this might help. Maybe some else will chime in.

Good luck

My dad is 72 and has absolutely grown to love surf fishing for perch. Any sandy beach outside the Golden Gate (the bay has restrictions to be aware of) is worth a try. Baker, Ocean, Pacifica, Rockaway, Linda Mar, Half Moon Bay, San Gregorio, Pomponio, everything between New Brighton and Monterey are all popular spots. We typically use grubs for the pure simplicity of it, but it's also rewarding to use a sand spike and sand crabs while sitting back and relaxing.

There are also some real easy to access, stocked, freshwater lakes to look into if that's something you're interested in (although we don't typically visit those in warm weather months). As long as a line is wet with pops by my side, it's a good day. Good luck!

Monterey Bay or along it's coast is loaded with nice perch. Always have done well at Jetty Beach or the south portion of Jaws at Moss landing on the beach side.

Surf fishing around Pacifica and surrounding area is a little slow this year. Maybe you can try San Pablo reservoir for some relaxing bank trout fishing.

Also, have you considered boarding a party boat for rockfish? I took the wife out last Friday and she had a blast. We were catching large size Vermillions, Gophers and coppers and I finally caught a keeper Ling. if you decide to go this way, try the  Ankeny boat. They only venture 2-7miles out compare to other boats where you wait a good 1 hour of ride cause they go further out. Just some suggestions.

The delta at Riovista pier... Striper will bite all day. Smallish but action all day. Squid is great or cut sardine... Clams too... Could hook into a dino too :smt007 Bring chairs. easy access and strait up hwy 12 http://www.rio-vista-ca.com/parks/waterfront-promenade the pier is at the end of the promenade and goes out 20-30 feet into productive water. Again mostly schoolies under size but fun to catch with random good fish thrown in... Good luck!

Newfish, I dont know their #. Just go to Pillar point harbor @ HMB. There's an office there next to Maverick's Surf shop. Thats where you buy tickets in the morning or to make reservation.

+1 for Rio Vista. We used to fish towards Ryer Island. Bring chairs, BBQ grill, or a cot. We used to fish overnight sometimes. We had more luck using Jumbo Bloodworms for stripers. I just hate how people trash that place though. I mean come on. If they can bring all those stuffs (food, drinks, tackles), how hard could it be to bag them afterwards and dump at a nearest gas station? That kind of shit makes me sick!
