A Ruger 10/22 is a GREAT choice!
Here's a tack driver that I built about a year ago.  This gun is a ton of cheap accurate fun.  I did a trigger job, added a fluted bull barrel, 4-16x50 scope, and swapped the original stock for this laminated stock.  This rifle routinely shoots 1/4" to 1/2" five shot groups at 50 yards.  And believe-it-or-not, with Lino " Tailwalk" as my witness, I once shot a sub one inch 5 shot group at 100 yards at the Chabot Gun Range.  You could cover all 5 holes with a nickel. Of course, the rifle was benched and shot in near perfect conditions. :smt003

I have almost all of the above, My son and I just finished a AR build, you can build it as fast as you can afford. What a great time for my boys and I, we built more than just a gun. One is 16 and the other is 18, and they both know everything!!!!! For the home nothing beats the old scatter gun :smt001 :smt001For going out to the range, and we go alot, two three times a week before it got so hot, the Ruger 10/22. Great gun. We also built up that gun with some hot rod parts and it is very accurate. But nothing brings a smile to someones face than shooting the AR!!!!! :smt003 :smt003 :smt003
Thanks,
Codzilla

I used to get a lot of odd looks from people siting in deer rifles at the iron moutian range with my 10/22. My mosin M44 is the most fun to shoot of all the guns I own. Huge fire balls, cheap ammo, bayonet. Its a 70 year old hammer and sickle tack driver with the bayonet fixed!

Thats hella sweet Chuck! I just picked up this little 10/22 and im looking to do some of the same things with it.  So far I picked up the better bolt release so you dont have to fool with the standard little button, and the better magazine release.  Im looking to do some trigger work also, maybe you could give me some pointers! :smt003

I own lots of old rifles. No Nagants as of yet, but a few friends do. All that has been said here is echos of what they say to me.
I bought a 303 Brit and love it! M1 Garand is my baby!! 8 mm Mauser is my ol' musket as a tweeker put it too me while deer hunting, ask birddog for that story!
two years ago I picked up the new Winchester mod 70 featherlight in 308 and LOVE it, the last  four times I pulled the trigger, meat was on the table. In Wyoming my best shot a dead 'lope at 430 yards. Had a gunsmith look at it and he was impressed, and in his mind all Winchesters after 64 were junk!
Ask your self what you want in your new rifle?

Depends on what you are looking for primarily. A great hunting rifle is a so-so defense gun and vise versa. All guns are good range guns. :smt003 Also rifles are a less than ideal choice for home defense due to overpenetration of walls and target.

If you want centerfire auto any of the modern ar-15 type rifles would be a great choice so long as it's CA legal. Personally I am a huge fan of 7.62 nato/.308 rounds and highly recommend the AR variant chambered in that caliber. A 7.62 would be a horrible home defense gun though unless if you lived alone on a huge ranch. Stay away from the mini-14's because they are very inaccurate.

In my opinion it's all gonna depend on what you really want an need. Make a list and narrow down your wants and needs In a rifle.
Go to bullseye in Castro valley or Irvington arms in freemont an look around both have knowledgable people that will help you make the right choice. Traders has moved to castro valley but still only sell ammo.
I've got too many to list but the ruger ranch rifle is a decent budget rifle and ar15's are addictive so watch out I own several and a closet full of parts.
If its strictly to be a plinking rifle I'd go with the ruger 1022 tons of cheap upgrades and accessories and they go on sale at big 5 often for less than 250 in stainless.
Good luck with your search.

Vince, the .223 is a varmint round, don't think it is legal for deer  (not sure on this, any input here?)  What are you planning on hunting with the rifle you get?
How about the Ruger SR-22?

.223 is legal for deer I've taken a few with my Remington r15 well placed shots are a must. For deer I recommend something a little bigger tho.

For the money if you are looking for a semi auto.  I like the sks, ammo is cheap, it shoots well, and costs far less than an AR.  I have 30 years with M-16's, I have shot a lot of Euro Military weapons. Hands down for accuracy you can't beat the H&K G3 series, but as everything German it tends to be overly complicated.  One of the Italian Army used a beretta clone of the M-14 shooting 7.62 x 51, good gun but the weight sucked, the Dutch had a FAL style rifle while accurate at long ranges, really wasn't that great at close in, as the barrel went on for a day and a half.  The AR family suffers from several problems, green tip (no lead) ammo doesn't expand enough to knock the bad guy down enough for my personal liking, 2. the gas operated system has a tendency to be the diritiest weapon on the block after sustained use, The AR was a Stoner wanna be and had the Army gone with the Stoner, many people belive that was a far superior weapon we wouldn't have the problems with the M-16 family that we have had since the 1960's.  The AR's been around a long time and there are better rifles out there.  The AR is prone to collect dirt from every source imaginable as the AR is built to very tight tolerances as opposed to an AK/SKS which has looser tolerances.

I have heard good things about the AR-10 in 7.62 x 51, as well as a AR's with a push rod system (no more gas operated system, which keeps the crude out of the chamber).

Take an SKS and a few hundred rounds and an AR and a few hundred rounds, shoot them as fast as you possibly can,  Now take the SKS throw it in the dirt (or AK if you so desire), drag through the dirt and shoot it.  DO the same with with your AR, which one kept shooting????

Now take a coconut and place it on a  stand, take the AR and try to smash the coconut as hard as you can.  Did it break?  Sorry to hear you need a new stock.  Now take your SKS, and smash open the coconut, eat it if you want.  Whats that you say, "Kevin the SKS broke the coconut?" Of course it did, it is a killing machine.

But why did the AR stock break? Well the what did you expect from plastic?

The M-4 varient has developed a reputation as failing in prolonged firefights in Wanat Province, Afghanistan as internal parts lmelted or became to stressed due to heat.  Many an "operator," I saw over there was carrying an AK overthere Iraq.  The funny part is, you never heard or saw of Iraqi insurgent using an M-16/M-4...why is that?

Now the ultimate testimony, how many tankers (who normally carry a 9mm) , SF, and other special operators will pick up a Klashnikov over an AR?

These are just a few reasons why I am not a big fan of the AR/M-16 style rifle

This guy was so bad a$$, that after being shot in the face, and having it come out the other side, he turned around and killed the counter sniper. Now I don't care who you are, that takes skill!

I'm not that familiar with fire arms,I only know the one I own it's a .40 whalter that I shoot at the range and it's my primary home defense.I was entertaining the idea of getting a semi auto rifle as a perimeter defense (home defense) in case if the poop hits the fan.I should've clarifyed it in the post .Im gonna shoot it at the range but it's not for plinking,I'm gonna get a rimfire pistol for that,as far as hunting Im not gonna be die hard hunting.I'm just gonna bring it with me in case I run into a bear on a hike or something in that nature.I'm not gonna be hunting game 200 yards out or anything like that.the part of Oakland I live in it's not that great I have two very small children and if riots break out I will be protecting my family with it.so I'm willing to spend some money on it,a shotgun is scary but a semiauto poping off rounds will make you think twice
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it
